![]() | Dark Passion Play by Nightwish
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.55 Nightwish's new album featuring the new singer Anette Olzon, one of the best albums of this year so far. I know there is a lot of controversy surrounding the new singer, but I assure you, this does not disappoint. This is still the Nightwish we all know and love.
![]() | The Heart of Everything by Within Temptation
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.94 A symphonic metal band, Within Temptation is overall very accessible and features the beautiful voice of Sharon den Adel.
![]() | Karmacode by Lacuna Coil
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.47 Featuring the beautiful female vocals of Cristina Scabbia and the somewhat gruff male vocals of Andrea Ferro, this makes for a great combination of heavyness and subtlety that would be foolish to let pass.
![]() | Vinland Saga by Leaves' Eyes
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.96 After leaving Theatre of Tragedy in 2003, celebrated vocalist Liv Kristine formed Leaves' Eyes, a symphonic masterpiece of epic proportions. Her husband, Alexander Krull provides some death grunts, but only on a couple of songs, and it fits perfectly.
![]() | Nordlys by Midnattsol
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $9.39 A band featuring Liv Kristine's younger sister Carmen Elise as the vocalist, very much like Leaves' Eyes, but Carmen is an alto, while her sister is a soprano. Many say that she is not as good as her sister, but I think she is very skilled.
![]() | Trinity by Visions Of Atlantis
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $6.99 A band quite similar to Nightwish, features female vocals by Melissa Ferlaak (formerly of Aesma Daeva) and clean male vocals by Mario Plank. The sound is more mainstream, but the orchestration sets it apart from other bands.
![]() | Embrace the Storm by Stream of Passion
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $8.67 One of the best CDs of 2005, Stream of Passion delivers something extremely unique with the amazing voice of Marcela Bovio. A very haunting album.
![]() | Vol. 4 by Lullacry
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.95 With a more mainstream sound along the lines of Evanescence's Fallen, Lullacry delivers some of what might be known as "pop metal". Tanja Lainio's voice is not particularly strong, but the album on the whole is quite enjoyable.
![]() | Griefshire by Elis
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $9.41 Following the death of lead singer Sabine Dunser, Elis decided to release her final works into a sort of tribute album to her. This is by far the band's best work, full of heavy quitars and a dark atmosphere.
![]() | Home by The Gathering
Buy new: $4.98 / Used from: $0.78 Unfortunately, lead singer Anneke van Giersbergen left The Gathering last August to spend more time with her family, but we can still enjoy this last CD of hers. Though most Gathering fans were quite disappointed by the lack of heavyness in this release, I still find that it is a worthwile buy for fans of this genre.
![]() | Storm by Theatre of Tragedy
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.97 After Liv Kristine left ToT, they found new singer Nell Sigland to take her place and together with the male vocals of Raymond Istvan Rohonyi, Storm comes off as a solid release, though not as heavy as some fans would have hoped for. Still very good, though.
![]() | Metatron by Darkwell
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.43 Though new lead singer Stephanie Luzie has what some might call an odd voice, I find that Metatron is a very good example of creative thinking. There is no definite direction that the album takes; right from the beginning, you have no idea wheree it will go next. Wonderful album.
![]() | Funeral for Yesterday by Kittie
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $3.97 Ah, Kittie. Well, Morgan Lander, the lead singer, is quite unusual. Instead of just singing the songs like most female vocalists, Morgan actually grunts and growls, something usually done by a man, which sets this CD apart from many in the genre.
![]() | Divine Conspiracy by Epica
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.79 One of the most amazing symphonic metal bands, up there with Nightwish. Simone Simmons' voice is amazing and paired with Mark Jansen's male death growls, an entirely hypnotizing atmosphere is created.
![]() | Grand Design by Edenbridge
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.59 I know that there are people who seem not to like this band very much, but after listening to their material, I have to say that they are a group of very talented musicians, and the singer, Sabine Edelbascher, is quite good. I recommend this.
![]() | Zerospace by kidneythieves
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.48 While this band, fronted by lead singer Free Dominguez, is not symphonic in any way, it instead combines dance and techno beats with heavy quitar riffs that are quite amazing. A must-have CD.
![]() | Walking with Strangers by The Birthday Massacre
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.58 The Birthday Massacre is a band I would most comare with Kidneythieves. Lead singer Chibi and the rest of the band combine techno and new wave beats to create a truly haunting experience.
![]() | Lucidity by Delain
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $10.80 Very much like Within Temptation. In fact Sharon den Adel is actually featured in one of the songs. This CD comes as a very nice change from all of the female singers who reach the operatic levels, as Charlotte Wessels has more of an ordinary voice, very strong and beautful. A must-have.
![]() | The Forgotten Goddess by Echoes of Eternity
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.27 Echoes of Eternity, unlike most bands on this list, is actually form the US. LA, to be exact, though you can't tell just by listening to them. The vocalist, Francine Boucher is most closely compared the the likes of Liv Kristine, and the heavyness of this band alltogether creates a wonderful atmosphere.
![]() | Bloodangel's Cry by Krypteria
Buy new: $11.94 / Used from: $7.33 Very reminiscent of Within Temptation, Krypteria has a slightly edgier sound that is made beautiful by Korean lead singer Ji-In Cho. One of the best.
![]() | Edge of Infinity by Lunatica
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $12.98 Though the band's name suggests otherwise, Lunatica has a very beautiful and pristine symphonic sound. Lead singer Andrea Datwyler uses her voice to create an epic masterpiece.
![]() | After Forever [Bonus DVD] by After Forever
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.99 After Forever's sixth album, with soprano Floor Jansen and death grunter Sander Gommans. They are quite like Epica, but this release features less grunts than before. This is absolutely amazing.
![]() | Salomé - The Seventh Veil by Xandria
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $47.64 Few thought that they could do it, but Xandria have indeed topped their last album, this time with some slight oriental undertones. Lisa Middelhauve's strong voice carries perfectly over the music, making this a CD you will not want to skip.
![]() | Nine Destinies and a Downfall by Sirenia
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.00 Many fans were upset by Sirenia' somewhat commercial reentry into the gothic/symphonic metal scene, the new lead singer, Monika Pederson, having somewhat more mainstream vocals than previous singers. However, I disagree and this is a fantastic album. Also features minimal death grunts by Morten Veland.
![]() | Lost Horizons by Luca Turilli Dreamquest
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $9.00 This is an amazing CD. Combining elements of metal, symphony, and even techno, this makes for a unique and wonderful CD. Myst's operatic voice is absolutely astounding.
![]() | Desiderata by Madder Mortem
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $6.41 Most people find this band very unusual, but I find it quite interesting and very good. Agnette M. Kirkevaag has a unique, yet lovable voice.
![]() | Delusions by To-Mera
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.25 This is literally one of the most amazing bands I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. The music is complex and intricate, Julie Kiss' vocals are strong and beatiful, and there are many surprising twists strewn throughout this CD. Check it out.
![]() | The Unexpected by Beautiful Sin
Buy used from: $35.37 Not many people know of this band, but it is really one of the heaviest ones I have ever heard. Magali Luyten's strong alto voice easily rides just above the music, and the guitars are awsome.
![]() | Grace Submerged by Octavia Sperati
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.34 This is a fantastic CD. This is an all-girl band (aside from the male drummer) and I absolutely love it. Silje Wergeland's voice is haunting, the guitars rock, and the bass is strong and crunchy throughout the CD.
![]() | My Winter Storm (U.S Version) by Tarja
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.52 Ah, the first solo album from former Nightwish vocalist Tarja Turunen. Though this CD was released as an import back in November, it wasn't actually released in the United States until this past February. I really do like this album. It is a great departure from her work with Nightwish, but I truly think this is quality work. This release features two US bonus tracks.
![]() | The Butcher's Ballroom by Diablo Swing Orchestra
Buy used from: $58.20 This album has absolutely everything. From opera vocals to swing music, prog metal to the digeridoo, this is an absolutely amazing helter-skelter of music. Lead singer Annlouice Loegdlund is a trained opera singer, much like Tarja Turunen, and she definitely lets her voice loose. Highly recommended.
![]() | Forever Will Be Gone by Mortal Love
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.99 This is a pretty good album overall. Hailing from Norway, this band has moved swiftly forward on the female metal trend. This is worth looking into.
![]() | Queen of Light by Imperia
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.00 Another fabulous album to add to the collection. This is both compelling and hypnotic, and it is truly a very good album. Vocalist Helena Michaelsen has a strong voice that resonates.
![]() | Evernight by Battlelore
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $7.38 I know that many people think that the fantasy metal genre is a bit overrated and contrived, but I think that Battlelore can hold their own against such accusations. The three vocalists, two females and a male death growler, give power to this album and make the Tolkein-remniscient concept shine through.
![]() | Lux Noctis by Coronatus
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $10.39 I recently discovered this band while reading a recommendation list so I decided to have a listen, and I was pleasantly surprised when I did. This band has two female vocalists who are both powerful and mesmerizing in vocal prowess. This is a band I would most certainly investigate.
![]() | Eternitas by Satyrian
Buy new: $22.98 / Used from: $14.98 I don't know what it is about this band, but something keeps my attention throughout the entire album. It could just be that the songs are genuinely good, the vocalists (both female and male) are fabulous, and at the end, you're left wondering when the next record will be out. 5 stars.
![]() | Begins by Dawn of Destiny
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $48.81 I don't know very much about this band other than the fact that they make very good music, the vocalists are strong (both male and female) and it is a worthwhile purchase. I enjoyed it.
![]() | Nova by Atargatis
Buy new: $10.98 / Used from: $7.71 Atargatis is a side project by Stephanie Luzie, the lead singer of Darkwell. They have another album, Wasteland, that's also good, but I prefer this one, Nova. It is a bit like Darkwell music, except perhaps that this is a bit more ethereal. This is the American release version of the CD.
