Customer Reviews
Excellent fuision of many different types of music
Even though it's supposed to be an album of desert guitars(middle east type), nonetheless, it is one of the best guitar albums i've heard in a long time. Strunz & Farah use combination of jazz, soft jazz, arabic belly dance, persian sufi music, latin pop etc. If you want to titillate your senses when listening music, this is it. Enjoy
An Enjoyable Compilation
Well, I should have been paying attention but never noticed until I listened through for the first time that I'd heard most of Desert Guitars before on other Strunz and Farah albums. Ok, so you get one new song in Caspian Night, and its a good one, but if you already have most of these songs on other albums why buy this? The main excuse I can make for owning the music twice is that this CD has a thematic unity that is evocative of the Middle East, hence the title. I hear Greek, Turkish, Iranian, and Arabic musical influences throughout. If you are in the mood for a sonic jihad, you can launch one as soon as you stick this in the CD player.
My favorites are Caspian Night, the Greek-sounding Zagros, the virtuoso Shamsa, the delightful Damask, and the Moorish feel of Centellas. To my taste, I find Mandala and Mirage both to be quite drawn out but beyond those all pleasant listening. Strunz and Farah have now been playing together a long time and have issued an impressive number of albums of fairly consistent quality. Desert Guitars is the kind of enjoyable compilation to have around when you yearn for a whiff of the Middle East. It comes with a folded insert that contains pertinent info about the songs and the musicians. Check it out, the price is right!
