Amazon.com Product Description
Whether you're e-mailing family and friends, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, the HP Compaq SR2010NX offers a versatile, strong base for your home computing needs. Focusing on affordability, this desktop provides room to grow with the ability to add up to 2 GB of RAM and a wide variety of peripherals via its four USB 2.0 ports. It's also chock-full of security and productivity software to get you going as soon as the PC's unpacked from its box, including Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006, Quicken New User Edition 2006, and Microsoft Works 8. It's powered by the efficient 1.8 GHz AMD Sempron 3400+ processor. Other features include a 120 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive for watching movies and burning your favorite music mixes to disc, an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 video/graphics card with up to 256 MB of shared video RAM, and Windows XP Home edition operating system. This is a Windows Vista capable PC.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 120 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) is a bit on the small side for desktop PCs, but is in line with comparable affordable models. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Processor: A lower-end cousin to AMD's XP processor line, the 1.8 GHz AMD Sempron 3400+ found in this notebook is speedy enough for everyday computing needs and running office productivity software, but won't be quite enough for higher-end video editing or 3-D gaming. This processor features AMD's Cool'n'Quiet Technology, which conserves power while also keeping the notebook's decibels to a minimum. It also features up to a 1600 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 128 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
  • Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (PC4200, 2 x 256 MB, 533 MHz) is enough to get you started, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. This desktop has a good 2 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB). Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • CD/DVD Drive: With the included DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, you'll be able to watch DVD movies as well as burn data and your favorite music mixes to CD. It has 48x write, 32x rewrite, and 48x read speeds for CDs, and a 16x DVD read speed.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with a Compaq keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Graphics and Sound
This desktop features an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150LE graphics/video card with up to 256 MB of shared video memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, this desktop has three PCI slots (two available), one PCI Express x16 slot (available), two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bay (available), and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied). It comes with the following external connectors:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 2 in rear)
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 line-out (front)
  • 2 microphone line-in (1 front, 1 rear)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), Encarta Encyclopedia 2006, Quicken New User Edition 2006, Microsoft Money 2006, Sonic DigitalMedia Plus, and HP Photosmart Premier for digital image editing and organizing.

Dimensions and Weight
This desktop measures 15.4 x 7.15 x 16.25 inches (HxWxD) and weighs approximately 24 pounds.

What's in the Box
The HP Compaq Presario SR2010NX desktop PC comes with a power cord, keyboard, and scroller mouse. It is backed by a one-year warranty for parts and labor from date of purchase, one-year technical phone service, and 90 days of software application support.

Customer Reviews

Decent home system.3
I purchased this PC a year or two ago from Best Buy, as my previous custom PC had been utterly destroyed in a heavy lightning storm. The only reason I bought this was its cheap price. being a minimum wage earning college student, I had to settle with what I could afford so that I could continue doing my school work and side business projects.

When you receive the SR2010NX, you also receive a host of HP Games and Trial Offers, all of which are simple to remove yourself, so it's no big deal. You'll also want to delete many of the Start Up entries, so this puppy isn't bogged down upon load up.

As far as overall performance goes, she handles OKAY if you're running things like MS Office, Firefox, and such. As soon as you start packing on the big boys though (iTunes, Adobe Photoshop, and mid range video games even on low graphics settings) this computer will rip you a whole new black hole of stress and anger. Think of the SR2010NX as a 2002 Honda Civic. You get it because you either don't need performance, or you can't afford performance. It gets you from A to B, it's comfortable, and it makes a great low profile family machine. I, on the other hand, use programs like Adobe CS, Firefox, and iTunes all at once, and I have video games that this Civic can't handle at all, and to make matters worse, this poor thing can only be upgraded to 2GB of SDRAM.

I am currently saving up, slowly but surely, for a replacement PC, custom built by yours truly that can handle my intensive daily regimen without constantly freezing and crashing programs (as the SR2010NX does). In essence, I'll be trading my trusty old Civic in for a 2009 Pontiac G8. Yum.

If you're looking for a PC that can handle the basics, and/or you are low on budget, this is a fine computer to get you by. If you need to crank more out of your machine however, you will be quickly disappointed and wracked with buyer's remorse. Get by for just a couple more months on a friend's PC or your college's computer room, and save up just a little more for something better.

Cheers.

Great computer for the price4
This replaced our 10 year old computer. Needless to say, the speed is fantastic, and we love the XP home operating system. The computer is very quiet and works perfectly. We may consider adding another 512 MB Ram Memory, but so far no problem. The unit comes with some easy to use software, like SONIC for burning CD's. We tossed out most of the trial version software) and installed our Office 2000 discs. The only small surprise was the outdated wheel mouse, no big deal, we purchased an optical mouse at Wal-Mart for under $10. We were glad NOT TO HAVE THE VISTA operating system, because some of our software will not run on VISTA. So we are very happy with the computer and the low price. We even got free shipping.

Good inexpensive choice 4
I picked this up at a local retailer with a nice rebate making it very affordable. The Sempron chip is very energy efficient and I love that I can barely hear the cooling fan. The system runs Dragon Naturally speaking with no problem at all however if you're going to be multitasking I would recommend at least 1g of memory. Overall this pc was a great replacement that didn't break the bank.
