This desktop is powered by the 2.6 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ dual-core processor, which increases the efficiency and speed of the PC while running multiple programs and the latest multi-threaded software. A built-in drive bay fits an optional HP Personal Media Drive (PMD), for up to 500 GB of additional storage that you can carry away with you when you go (PMD not included). It also features 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE video card (with up to 256 MB of shared video memory), 15-in-1 memory card reader, up to 8 channels of surround sound output, and a remote control with up to 16 feet of range.
This desktop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Business, which has a new user interface, named Windows Aero, that makes it easy to navigate through the operating system and from application to application. For instance, Windows Aero helps you juggle multiple tasks at once by providing a three-dimensional, real-time, animated view of all your open applications and documents. Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.
The Basics
- Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 X2 5000+ dual-core processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It outperforms the highest-performing AMD Athlon 64 4000+ single-core processor on multi-tasking benchmarks by up to 30 percent. Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.
This 2.6 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and each core offers a 512 KB L2 cache--for a 1 MB total. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Hard Drive: The incredibly huge 400 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space--enough for storing up to 240 hours of television programming, a vast multimedia collection, or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory (2 x 1024 MB, PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a good start right out of the box, and it offers a very fast 533 MHz speed. This desktop has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 1 GB), excellent for your multimedia needs today and tomorrow.
- DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and optical mouse (both PS/2) and remote control.
This desktop features an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150LE graphics/video card with up to 256 MB of shared video memory (allocated from the system RAM). Nvidia's exclusive TurboCache technology allows direct rendering from the GPU to system memory by leveraging the bi-directional PCI Express bandwidth. The TurboCache Manager dynamically allocates memory for maximum system performance while intelligent software algorithms maximize application performance. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
For expansion, this desktop features a drive bay that fits an optional HP Personal Media Drive--which enables you to add 500 GB of storage for your video and music libraries. It has three PCI expansion slots (one available), one PCI x16 Express slot (available), and the following external ports:
- 6 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 4 in rear)
- 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
- Composite video, S-Video, and analog audio inputs
- Headphone and microphone jacks
- Audio output: digital audio out, surround sound speakers--rear, side, center (subwoofer)
- 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
- 15-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Pro/Duo/Pro Duo, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, XD Picture Card, RSMMC, MMC Mobile, MMC+
- 4 USB 2.0 ports

Customer Reviews
Great computer and value (after minor glitch)
What's not to love with this powerhouse!!! Rather than pile on the superlatives let me address some points raised by another reviewer.
All delivery companies, including UPS, will leave your package if they have signed delivery instructions on file. Since we both work, and have left instructions with all the delivery companies, UPS left our computer at the front door. They will also leave it at a neighbor, provided you have your neighbors permission. We have also had UPS deliver packages to our work address (better get permission from your boss).
Before you order, make sure any tool/appliance is suitable for your special needs. Most people do not buy a computer just to watch TV.
After I hooked up everything (fast and easy to do with HP quick start guide) I turned it on expecting to be dazzled by the graphics on 20" LCD widescreen Samsung 206BW monitor. Much to my dismay, I got an error message saying the CPU fan had failed - and the system shut off. I tried to boot several times but got the same message.
I called HP Support. After about 10 minutes on hold I was able to explain the problem. Support said they were going to put a techie on the call. I waited on hold about 5 minutes. While I was waiting I opened up the side panel. Guess what I saw!!!
Apparently during shipping, a cable had worked itself into the fan, pinning down the blades and preventing it from spinning. I moved the cable, closed up the case, and turned it on. IT WORKED!
By the time the techie joined the call I was well into the initial setup. Support noted what had happened, thanked me for fixing the problem, chatted briefly, then we all happily went our separate ways. Total time on the phone about 30 minutes.
As the Start Guide says, the first time you turn it on, the computer sets up all the software, gets updates, and asks you some information. This whole process takes about 30 minutes, depending on additional software and your configuration.
WOW!!! Even double and triple WOWS!!! I am impressed! I've been in IT (programmer) for over 30 years, and writing web applications for nearly 10 years. The dual core is fast, 2 GBs of RAM virtually eliminate disk swapping.
Vista OS will take some getting used to; some things just don't work like they do in XP. But this old dog is learning new tricks, and I'm sure I'll soon be ripping and burning and crunching like an old pro.
I've had this about a week and I'm still discovering new delights. Many of the features I have not had time to use, but based on my experience so far, I am looking forward to using.
Since Vista is so new, there may be some applications that won't work properly, but do not let that stop you. Software companies are scrambling to keep up, and updates and new drivers are being delivered as we speak. So if you get an error message installing an application, contact them and/or Microsoft.
Vista notes when an application crashes, and sends information to Microsoft. I was surprised when a special driver was installed by Windows Update to satisfy a conflict an application had the night before. Somebody or something in Redmond heard my problem and solved it in 24 hours.
Would I buy this model again? YES!!!
Would I buy Vista again? Yes! It has some very impressive features, especially the graphics - This is the future trend of software.
I do love the 20" widescreen monitor. The only thing I would do differently is buy the 24" Samsung SyncMaster widescreen; bigger is better.
I have to go, should shut off the computer. Let's see ... Press Start...
A GREAT Machine!
HP has been right there when questions/problems needed answering. The 400GB hard drive is huge and with 2GB of RAM and AMD Dual core processor, really screams.
A problem early on (that I caused), HP over-nighted me materials I needed without delay. They're the very best in customer service in my experience I've ever had.
I might have taken 1/2 of a star off because there are too few PCI slots. I've never had this great a restriction in any PC I've owned.
Windows VISTA Home premium is smooth and very stable, but doesn't work with several applications I use many times daily. HP Support told me my Scanjet 3670 (which is more than 1 year old and thereby out of warranty) will not work with this system.
All things considered, this is a terrific computer and I'm pleased with its performance and HP's customer support.
Found 4 SATA ports on the mother board
I've owned this unit for 2 years. I love it. One thing that surprised me when opening the case was 4 SATA connectors on the mother board. Of course, two of them are being used: one for the DVD drive and the other for the Hard Drive. That leaves two additional SATA connectors to use at your leisure. I was pleasantly surprised because I saw no mention of this in the spec. I'm not sure if every motherboard today has this(or not) but I decided to take advantage of those two extra connectors. I purchased two "2 Terabyte" SATA internal hard drives. I connected them both now I have combined 4.5 Terabytes(with 500gb drive came with the system). If you are wondering where I found the space within the case, this is where I found them: There is an extra bay that can be used for an additional DVD drive. I just shoved my extra internal hard drive into that slot. There is also an extra bay that is suppose to be used for HP Personal Media Drive Bay (external USB hard drive slot) but those HP P.M.D. devices are too expensive. So I used the bay to slide in my own second SATA internal "2 terabyte" hard drive.
Now, I have a rocking system with 4.5 TERAbytes!!
