From Library Journal
Veterinarian Gray offers an alternative, natural approach to horse care and management. He defines the organic horse as one designed by nature, that is, an animal unaffected by environmental pollution, human-made contaminants, and poor care or management by humans. Gray views this as an ideal that all horse owners should strive toward, arguing that the organic state would reduce disease and infection in the horse population. His book features sections on nutrition, disease, pasture management, stabling, breeding, and training. In each, Gray begins with a description of the natural state in which horses have lived for centuries. He combines the best of what nature intended with new methods for maintaining and improving the natural environment, and he suggests how horse owners could work toward organic management. The book features color illustrations and many charts and graphs. It is originally a British publication, which is reflected in some of the charts and case studies as well as in the spelling. A thoughtful alternative for those who are concerned about their horses' health and vitality, this is recommended for equine collections. From Booklist
More advanced aspects of horsemanship and horse care are explored in this new book.
The horses of today live their lives very differently from their wild ancestors--instead of moving over large ranges and feeding on numerous plant species, they are confined to stalls or pastures with limited grazing and fed on commercially prepared feeds. How these modern changes have affected horses, and what the horse owner can do to combat them, are the subjects of Gray's book on horse care. Gray, a veterinarian, provides easy-to-understand explanations of the horse's digestive system, how a horse eats, and the raw materials that should be available for balanced nutrition. Boxed pointers, case studies, and tips are found throughout the text, and a list of what you can do ends each chapter. Well illustrated with color photographs, this book will be useful for stable managers and those who house their own horses. Nancy Bent

A Great Resource
The Organic Horse by Peter Gray is a great book and I give it a 5 out of 5 rating. It gives the best insight into the natural state of the horse. The purpose of the book is to draw attention to the natural horse, and to show how the presence of substances it eats may affect its body systems, lower its immunity, influence the spread of disease and affect performance. Gray explains his information through using evidence such as illustrations, statistics, and research. Anyone who is interested in horses should read this book, but it is not only for beginners in the horse world but the professional also.
