From Library Journal
Johnson, a feline behavior consultant, details the causes of and suggests solutions for such common cat problems as aggression, abnormal eating habits, and litter box difficulties. Her approach is to use techniques that work in harmony with cats' natural proclivities and instincts. One section details the use of Bach flower remedies in treating feline emotional problems, although readers interested in other alternative treatments such as herbs and homeopathy may wish to consult Anitra Frazier's The New Natural Cat (LJ 11/15/90). The book is repetitive in parts (the author recommends "play therapy" as treatment for a wide variety of emotional maladies, and the use of an air ionizer is suggested many times), but it does discuss many common behavior problems with more depth than most cat care books, including Johnson's previous cat book, Cat Love (LJ 5/1/90). Not essential, but libraries with large animal care collections may wish to consider.

THE AUTHOR SCOOP
What is the hardest thing about writing a book?Making sure I disguised my clients' characteristics well enough so no one would get mad at me.If you were an animal, what would it be & why?Well, that's a no-brainer! I'd have to be a cat. They have life figured out—protect your turf, stay well-groomed, and always be on the lookout for food.Have you ever met a famous person? With my career, I've had many famous clients, especially in country music since I live in Nashville. I love cats because they don't discriminate. They don't care that their owners are famous. They pee on their sofas anyway! What is your favorite thing about being an author?Knowing that you can step into people's lives through your words and hopefully make a difference.

How To Have a Happy, Well-Adjusted Cat
People without experience with cats often regard them as cold and aloof, but it's not true. Cats are sensitive and loving. They crave affection from you. They dote on routine, security, and comfort. Give them this, plus playtime with you each day, and you will have a cat that will love you. Unfortunately, cats can suffer trauma from past mistreatment, injury, terror at loud noises, or other unpleasant events. (Our cat hides behind me and peers out while the housekeeper runs the vacuum sweeper.) Cats suffer depression from loss of a family member, a move to a new home, or almost any change in the familiar routine. The author does a masterful job of showing us how to cope with a cat's traumas and develop a happy, purring cat. Our cat awarded five sniffs to this gold mine of information and advice.
This book was not only helpful but well written.
Not long ago a stray turned up in our backyard and we decided to keep her. This was a wonderful decision for us and for her, unfortunately our other cats didn't agree. What insued where fights day and night, night and day. Twisted Whiskers helped us to better understand why they were all fighting and how we could cope. The insight and advice in this book was wonderful and I highly recommend it to anyone who owns a cat, anyone thinking of adopting a cat and most certainly anyone adding another cat to the family (read it before you add, there is a right way to handle the addition and Ms. Johnson spells it out).
The most comprehensive feline behavior book I've read
How many times have I wished Dr. Dolittle could come visit me and just talk to my 16-year-old curmudgeon and have Rambo pass along what's got him yelling all night.....
"Twisted Whiskers" is the next best thing. Pam Johnson discusses a wide variety of feline behavior problems in cats' terms so we can form better human-feline cohabitation.
Her chapters on "Old Age" and "Depression" were indispensible in dealing with Rambo. In addition, Johnson talks about natural remedies rather than having us end up with a generation of doped-up furbabies. Johnson lists the Bach's Flower remedies and their appropriate applications and doseages for felines.
Excellent read! Highly recommended for new and old-time cat companions.
