Clever Marketing for a Designer Dog Food - There are better choices...2
Hello Fellow Dog Lovers:

I used to make all my own meat dog food to mix with quality dry food, but since I no longer breed, I've been relying on the higher (and increasing) nutritional value of commercially available canned products. Merrick's has been promoted heavily among some owner's groups as being 'as appealing as people food', and I really wanted to give it a try. I purchased the Lunchbox Assortment of their offerings, the seven top sellers with a 'surprise' selection included.

Right up front, let me say that I think their products are probably well-balanced for most dogs based on the analyses I've read, and substantially above average among canned foods nutritionally. What galls me is the actual product when in the bowl - 'meat-ish' chunks with the color and texture of canned mushrooms, a few pieces of recognizable vegetable shapes and colors, and sauce. Mostly, a can of Merricks is just sauce.

The Brauts n' Tots were the only variety that actually had a large percentage of quasi-meat to sauce; the rest of the cans I opened were, by volume, only 1/4 to 1/3 'meat' chunks and veggies, with the balance a watery gravy. Most processed dog foods are primarily water, but few charge so much for it.

I don't understand how this may seem so unusually appetizing to some people, but my dogs just ate their crunchy with the sauce and ignored the 'meat'. The one selection they actually relished was the fish flavor - I do feed my dogs regular canned mackerel over their crunchy every now and then, and they consider it a treat.

There are better, more economical choices, even among the super-premium canned foods. My dogs think the Innova and Evanger's products are irresistable, and they are both nearly 100% meat, making them an ideal and appetizing topper. Even Evanger's regular Cooked Chicken, which is "whole dressed chicken, water sufficient for processing" and nothing else, is half the price of Merrick's entrees and goes 2-3X as far. Plus, it looks and smells like - cooked chicken! No wonder they love it.

So, if you have no problem spending double that amount for a can of food that is mostly watery glop, well, I guess their cute marketing works. Shake the can, though, and you'll see my point.

Love the variety!5
My dogs go mad when I just add a little bit of Merrick canned food with a little water to their regular kibble. They love the whole ordeal of mixing and fixing, rather than just dumping a cup of dry in their bowls. Great to have a variety pack. I'm totally convinced they prefer variety because when I have guest dogs boarding with me, no one wants their own food. Everyone wants everyone else's dry food. But when I add a little Merrick "gravy" to each, they gobble it all down. Beware of the Wing-a-lings though. These are actual chicken wings, but they are so soft that they desolve when touches, so dont' be alarmed when you see wings in the cans. Treat your doggies well. Give them a taste of Merrick!
