Amazon.com
The uniquely stylish mirror-finished center-unit and wood-finished speakers are an alluring combination. The MCD703's prominent design complements its equally remarkable audio and visual technology within.

Feature List

  • Play DVD, (S)VCD, MP3-CD, WMA-CD, CD(RW) and Picture CD
Micro system's integrated DVD player provide an attractive combination with its classic design. Video fans and music lovers can benefit from the widely accepted DVD and CD formats, and the increasing popularity of MP3 and WMA digital music. It plays all CD-formats; DVD-Video discs, Video CDs, Super Video CDs, Audio CDs, CD(RW) MP3 CDs, WMA-CD and Picture CD.
  • 12-bit/108MHz video processing for sharp, natural images
12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.
  • Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.
  • Dolby Digital for ultimate movie experience
Because Dolby Digital, the world's leading digital multi-channel audio standards, make use of the way the human ear naturally processes sound, you experience superb quality surround sound audio with realistic spatial cues.
  • Digital Sound Control for optimized music style settings
Digital Sound Control offers you a choice of pre-set Jazz, Rock, Pop and Classic controls you can use to optimise the frequency ranges for different musical styles. Each mode uses graphic equalizing technology to automatically adjust the sound balance and enhance the most important sound frequencies in your chosen music style. Ultimately, Digital Sound Control makes it easy for you get the most out of your music by precisely adjusting the sound balance to match the type of music you are playing.
  • Dynamic Bass Boost delivers deep and dramatic bass
Dynamic Bass Boost maximizes your music enjoyment by emphasizing the bass content of the music throughout the range of volume settings - from low to high – at the touch of a button! Bottom-end bass frequencies usually get lost when the volume is set at a low level. To counteract this, Dynamic Bass Boost can be switched on to boost bass levels, so you can enjoy consistent sound even when you turn down the volume.
  • Loudness for bass and treble enhancement
In the sound spectrum, high and low frequencies are relatively less audible to human ears - especially at low volumes. By activating the Loudness feature, the bass and treble will be amplified so you can savor a more balanced sound perception overall.
  • Total 100W RMS
  • High-end component design with stand
The component-designed DVD micro system comes with a stand that features four triangular feet. It can prevent any audio frequency distortion due to vibration, overheating and electromagnetic interference generated from the amplifier and DVD loader. The result is smooth and excellent and sound reproduction.
  • Elegant wood-finished speakers
  • High quality remote control for comfortable use

Actually Not a Bad Little Unit !!5
I've owned this for about a month now. I bought it for our bedroom, to connect to the Philips HDTV. While the subwoofer does not rattle the walls, the sound is actually pretty decent for size/price. It includes AM/FM radio, plus clock radio features -- how cool is that. The rosewood laminate is well done, and the unit has some weight too. For a bedroom or home office, where you don't care about true Dolby 5.1, and don't want to run a bunch of wires around, this is a pretty cool setup. And as I said before, the clock-radio feature is kinda like gravy. I will tell you that you can buy this for $110, if you are a member of Sam's Club. Power buys are the greatest. Amazon is good about pricing on most things, but sometimes they get beat pretty bad. Buy this little beast at Sam's if you can. This is a progressive scan DVD drive, so it will do great on HDTV, and it includes Dolby Digital.

Overall it's reasonable for the price, but WATCH OUT for the DVD player...3
I brough this MCD703 11 months ago from Philips Employee Store since I work for the company. Price is really good for what the system offers. Defintely the system has a very attractive look (slim and compact with wood-finished speakers). I also agree the sound quality is pretty good for my case. It has many preset sound modes which users can choose to accomplish different room environments. For me, I put it in my bedroom and mainly use it as the home system for watching TV and DVD moives and maybe listening to some CDs once in a while. It also has two AUX input RCA connections for your Video Game Consoles, 2nd DVD players, Karaoke players,.... Also, the system is quite easy to program in general.

Now, let's get to the issues.
1. If you are using Component (Y Pb Pr) cables from its DVD player to your TV, after you connect everything for the first time, make sure go to the menu and change your DVD video output format to "Component" (Y Pb Pr). Otherwise, you will see your first DVD movie playing only in pink color on your screen and you might wonder what's going on.

2. However, the part that I hate the most is the DVD player itself! Ever since I bought it new, I realized the DVD player will often halt during play back. Almost every 5-10 minutes, it stops and kind of doing some processing. Then it might move on in some cases, but it could just halt like that. At first, I though it must be the disc is scratched. But these are brand new original DVD movies. I have tried many of them and they are all liked that. On the other hand, they can be played on my other $30 cheap DVD players and give me no problem. One thing funny is the problem don't show up if just playing music CDs. That's why I suspect it has something to do with the data processing of the progressive scan S/W of the DVD player. Anyway, I have called the customer service and have them replacing the units 3 times. Including my first unit from purchase, I am on the 4th units. Three of them were brand new from unopend retail boxes and one of them was obviously a refurb unit. Yet, this playback problem has been occurred on all 4 systems while they are just a week old - no exception. These 4 units were from variety of lot numbers based on their seial numbers and so they must made at different months of the year. Therefore, I pretty much conclude this is a design issue. But funny enough, when I searched on the web for other users' reviews, I can only found one other person talking about this problem. So just watch out if you are considering this system. Now I am approcahing end of the 1 year warranty and I guess I will just keep playing DVDs with my cheap player through the AUX connector.

3. Final comment about it is their customer exhange/repair policy is bad. I have to pick up everything in a box and mail it to them (even the only componet has problem is the DVD player). Since the whole system is quite heavy, it costed me around $35 to sent it from CA to AR. You need to pay for the S/H for the very first RMA (return). Then Philips will issue RMA sticker for the rest of the returns within warranty period. Then it normally takes 5-6 weeks to get it back in mail and so I have the units for 11 months, but 4 of those months were spent on waiting for the return to show up.

Hope this gives you some ideas. In conclusion, if you don't need to watch DVDs, this is a great choice for the money.

Worth the money!5
I purchased this system two weeks past... I was lucky enough to get the system for $144.00 on ebay. It came from the philips outlet store, accompanied by a warrenty. Let me say that when I pulled the system from the box, I knew that it was going to sound nicely. the receiver was solid and decently heavy do to the amplifier. Once I hooked everything up, it was a breeze to operate, and the sound was majestic for a system that can be found for $200.00 or less! I agree that when the volume is at the lower end, you lose some highs and lows (bass). However, once the "loud" button is pressed... Beautiful music is received. It has a modern feel/look too it. and is very quiet when the dvd/cd is running.
I could go into the ohm rating/watt ratings with the reader, but I want to keep it simple. Rest assured, for the money, it plays wonderful music. And DVD movies are as crisp as can be. You won't be dissapointed.
