Kensington Saddlebag Sport Notebook BackpackKensington Saddlebag Sport Notebook Backpack
Buy new: $53.84 - $70.99
First things first: Get yourself a good laptop backpack to keep all this stuff in. It should be big enough to fit everything, plus some souvenirs and maybe a sandwich. It should be at least small enough to fit in an overhead compartment, and not flashy, so it doesn't attract attention.

You'll want a digital camera to chart all your travels. I've never seen Canon make a bad camera at ANY price point. Not only is this one pocket-friendly, it has an image stabilizer. That will drastically reduce your blurry pictures.

You'll need something to store your pictures on. 2 gigs should be enough for a couple days, if not your whole trip. That's hundreds of photos.

The iPod Touch may be sexier, and have Wifi, but it can't come close to the iPod Classic's storage capacity. Load this thing up with thousands of songs, movies, podcasts, and even entire seasons of your favorite TV show. For those on a budget, I have the 80GB version, and it's been really good to me.
Apple AV Composite CableApple AV Composite Cable
Don't take the iPod's included cable with you to charge it. Grab one of these. Not only can you use it to charge with any USB port, you can connect it to a TV and watch your iPod stuff on the big screen. Great for hotels, or relatives who don't get good cable service.

I can't recommend the iPod highly enough, but it's useless if you damage its screen. Protect that baby.
Noise Canceling HeadphonesNoise Canceling Headphones
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $17.99
Ambient noise (especially on airplanes) can make it really hard to hear your music, and the earbuds included with any electronic device are cheap crap. These will filter out all the cabin noise, and you can use them with ALL the devices I suggest. Oh, be sure to grab a cheap pack of AAA batteries.
Nintendo DS Lite Cobalt / BlackNintendo DS Lite Cobalt / Black

With all due respect to Sony's PSP, which is a great system, I think the Nintendo DS has a better selection of pick-up-and-play games. It specializes in games you can play for five minutes or five hours. On top of that, you get access to the entire library of GBA games.

Even if you know the way, one of these can save your butt if you take a wrong turn or have an unexpected detour.
The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyThe Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Buy new: $13.60 / Used from: $3.00
Never underestimate the importance of a low-tech solution. I like to alternate between all of the above and a good book, and they don't get much better than this. Carry this at all times, and always know where your towel is.

THE BEST TRAVEL LAPTOP EVER... with a price to match. Still, if you don't mind the chunk of change, you can't beat it. My computer was always the heaviest thing in my bag. With this, it'd be the lightest. It's super-thin, super-light, and actually a pretty powerful computer. It doesn't have a memory card slot, though, so be sure to get a card reader.

If you're on a budget, this would be a decent alternative to the MacBook Air, though I cringe at buying a computer with Vista.
