The Safety 1st Odorless Diaper Pail keeps the smell of soiled diapers out of the nursery. It is a convenient one step diaper disposal system and requires no twisting and turning - just drop the diaper in and go.
Customer Reviews
Not the best but pretty good
I find that most people who post glowing reviews for baby items generally have a tiny infant and have not used it for a long period of time.
I have used this diaper pail for over 2 1/2 years now. That means my two kids have been eating solid food for about 2 years now, which is where "odor control" really needs to kick in. Because I never had a problem with odors until the kids started eating real food. That's about the time the odor disc ran out so I just inserted a glade plug-in. But now I don't even bother.
The reason I bought this pail and not the revered Diaper Genie was that it used regular trash bags and could some day be used as a regular garbage can if you took the lid off.
I have to change the pail twice a week and yes it can get pretty stinky. Yes, it is made of plastic so it WILL absorb odors. Here is the key: wash out the pail once in a while with a little bleach (I've only done this a handful of times, maybe once every two or three months). Also, when I change the bags, I spray the pail down with Lysol to kill the bacteria.
I much prefer a few more minutes of work for me than buying expensive refills for the Diaper Genie.
Also, after 2 1/2 years of opening and closing the smaller door, the hinge finally gave way but still functions all right. I am in the home stretch with diapers (maybe one more year to go) and don't see the need to waste money on another diaper pail because the hinge doesn't work perfectly.
Inexpensive and decently effective
This product is very inexpensive... and to some degree you get what you pay for.
Pros:
- Very affordable
- Can use any trash bag
- Easy to use and easy to change bags
- Nice to have a deodorizer container so I can add more or change the disc.
Cons:
- It is a bit noisy on open and close. (There are two things that open and close. One is the entire top, for when you change the bag. The smaller part is just the part for when you need to throw away a diaper or wipes.)
- It is not all that effective with smells. The deodorizer disc that is used for this product is not that helpful. Because the product does not seal as tight as more expensive ones, the smell can come out. But it is not as bad as what some reviewers have said. If you close a dirty diaper like you should, that helps a little. Also, if you add some other deodorizer and air freshener, it makes it tons better. Because the disc holder has a lot of space you can add your own products.
Summary:
It is cheap, and not the greatest product ever. But it is serviceable. And I can make it better by adding my own deodorizers. I'd still rather do that than buy a really expensive diaper pail.
A worthwhile Product
I got this item as a gift for my shower. And I could not have been more happy. It does a great job of keeping out the odors, but as with any trash you must take it out after a few days. The best part is, you do not need to purchase any special bags, you can use regular 13 gallon trash bags. (We buy the scent kind.) Once the disk air freshner runs out in few months, you can replace with another type of airfresher. We have found those air freshner that hang on the side of your toilet boil to be perfect. They are really inexpensive and very strong. Just place one of those little guys in the top...and you are good to go.
