If you buy this, you may be able to avoid getting any other one-word books
Every page or two page spread has a number of photographs in various categories - animals, things we do, food, vehicles.

The photographs range from things your kid will see every day (bathtub, bowl, dog) to things your kid probably will *not* see every day (flamingo, kookaburra, helicopter).

At the end, there's two pages focusing on colors and shapes.

Just right for this age group. I recommend this book, and, really, the whole series.

I will note that some of the pictures can be hard to distinguish - singing, for example, you'll have to ham it up to make the point that they're singing instead of just standing there with their mouths open. That's a minor problem, though, not a major one.

On my family's 2nd copy - Had to buy another!!!
This was my son's favorite book until he was 2 1/2 years old. He carried it EVERYWHERE. After two years of abuse, we bought another copy for my second son (no fault of the book's quality), but the pages started to fall out. The pictures are photos/not drawings and the card stock is easy for little hands to turn so that the can "read" on their own. My son would study this book for 20 minutes at a time. With the help of this book, my son learned his shapes and colors, by the age of two.

We love this book and want more of them!
We love this book! I love that some of the pictures 'spill' out of their little boxes, and I love that the pictures have solid brightly colored backgrounds. I think the pictures are of great quality, and find myself literally staring at the 'our world' pages. Our son, who is 14 months old, has never been able to sit still for even a couple of pages of a story... But I've seen my son recently taking the book, turning the pages and looking at the pictures... Yesterday, my son "got it!" and started kissing the pictures in the book of the orange kitty.
Lauren is right about everything she said... and would kick butt as an editor! However, everyone is different, and the things that Lauren mentioned weren't high on my list of priorities for this book. I'm trying to get my son to associate words with things, and things in a book with things in the world around him... I am an average everyday Mom, and I loved this book! In fact, in the book there is a picture of two little kids reading a "my big animals" book that looks like it is exactly the same style of picture book by the same people, and I came online to see if I could order a copy of that one too... so I could go through more animal names and sounds with him... :)
The cover feels like slightly padded cardboard, and that is fine for us.
