When an old lady finds a small elephant in the park, what is she to do? Take him home and treat him like a pet dog, of course! Peanut's not like other dogs, though . . . and another walk in the park reveals that he's missing from the circus. When Peanut returns home, the old lady is sad again, until she comes across a camel . . . who she decides is a cat!

Interactive opportunity
Our 3-year old loves this simple book. I thought it might be too basic for him at first, but the story moves so well in combination with the illustrations that much of the reading experience is talking about what is going on rather than just reading a really cute story. It is always a favorite moment to contradict the book each time gleefully squealing, "That's not a puppy" when Mildred finds the stray "puppy" Peanut.
We talk a lot about people's feelings and discuss why Mildred is sad before she finds the "puppy". Our son still calls the camel at the end of the story a giraffe, but he knows it's definitely not a "kitten."
Ideally it is geared for a slightly younger child, but he's already "reading" it to his younger sister, so it crosses the two ages well.
Friendship
A very simple and sweet story of Mildred who is lonely, and has very poor eyesight! Mildred's kitty is an elephant, and she loves him dearly until he has to go back to thee circus. Very simple text, wonderful pictures. For the very young more like ages 2-4. maybe 5.
A fun and different tale about pets and companionship evolves.
Linas Alsenas' PEANUT tells of Mildred, who gets a new pet named Peanut and decides he's a dog: the only problem is Peanut won't fetch, roll over, or do anything that other dogs do. The problem is - he's not quite a dog at all. A fun and different tale about pets and companionship evolves.
