Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4-- Lenssen's full-color photographic artistry and the majestic mystery of hot air balloons are a perfect combination in this book of opposites. Serving a dual purpose, the book gives fundamental information on how these giants of the sky function, while employing such words as ``empty'' and ``full,'' ``noisy'' and ``quiet,'' and ``up'' and ``down'' to introduce the concepts. Opposites attract; this colorful, appealing book will draw readers in and hold their attention. --Joyce Richards, Prairie Grove Elementary School, AR

From Kirkus Reviews
Thirty lovely color photos of a hot-air balloon, on the ground and aloft, accompanied by a simple but informative text. In addition, each pair of pictures is labeled with appropriate opposites: ``rise'' and ``fall,'' ``near'' and ``far,'' etc.; ``light,'' showing the balloon's shadow on a sunny field, and ``dark,'' the burner making the brightly colored craft ``glow like a lantern,'' make an especially imaginative pair. It's an interesting idea, though the opposites and the main text may appeal to slightly different levels, and the pairings imposed on the photos cause some bumpiness in the narrative flow; still, Lenssen's first book is carried out with grace and style. Similar in appeal to Johnson's Fire and Silk (1991), but for a slightly younger audience. (Nonfiction/Picture book. 3-8) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Full-color photographs follow a hot air balloon called Tickled Pink through a typical flight and introduce basic concepts such as near and far. Sentences on each page provide facts about ballooning and put the words in context: "Standing near, Tickled Pink is taller than a six-story building. But when far away, it is a pink dot hanging in the sky." -- Junior Library Guild
