![]() | A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $4.00 When scientists try to write for a general audience, the end product can be damn near abysmal. When Bryson takes on this task, however, a formerly dense subject becomes breezy and engrossing.

![]() | River Out Of Eden: A Darwinian View Of Life (Science Masters Series) by Richard Dawkins
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $1.75 I've never disliked a book written by Dawkins, but I wouldn't recommend this book to everyone. It is his shortest book yet and it is by no means foundational. If you're looking for a cursory glance at Dawkins' ideas, this might be what you're looking for. Otherwise, pick up one of his more important works.

![]() | The Selfish Gene: 30th Anniversary Edition--with a new Introduction by the Author by Richard Dawkins
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $6.75 While reading this book, something happened in my brain and I finally "got" evolution. I had always understood it to be the main organizing principle in biology, but not until reading The Selfish Gene did I really appreciate its significance and scope. Dawkins is a great teacher.

![]() | What Do You Care What Other People Think?: Further Adventures of a Curious Character by Richard Phillips Feynman
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $2.99 If you liked 'Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman', you'll like this as well. Expect more of the same and you won't be disappointed.

![]() | The Scientists: A History of Science Told Through the Lives of Its Greatest Inventors by John Gribbin
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $9.97 Some people think the big names in science have received more than their share of the credit for human knowledge. If you're one of these people, you probably won't like this book. It is as much biography of these memorable individuals as an explanation of what it is they discovered (or are said to have discovered).

![]() | Lost Horizon: A Novel by James Hilton
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $2.94 I found this on my brother's bookshelf a while back and decided to give it a go. I actually enjoyed it. It's a fun adventure story that even a kid would appreciate, but there are ideas bundled up in Shangri-La that can be appreciated by adults. I enjoyed the movie, as well.

![]() | Thomas Paine and the Promise of America by Harvey J. Kaye
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $5.97 The first half of this book (a bio) is worth reading; the second half (the author's speculations about Paine's influence in the world after his death), not so much.
|
![]() | Evolution: The Remarkable History of a Scientific Theory (Modern Library Chronicles) by Edward J. Larson
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $3.25 This book gives a good historical perspective of evolution as an idea and how it has been publicly received at different times over the past 200 years.

![]() | Atheism: A Reader
Buy new: $17.92 / Used from: $2.10 A great collection of bits and pieces by famous atheist/agnostic/other writers and thinkers. I found myself reading several of them multiple times (for example, Ingersoll's "God in the Constitution"). It has an identical setup to Christopher Hitchens' 'Portable Atheist'.

![]() | Atheist Universe: The Thinking Person's Answer to Christian Fundamentalism by David Mills
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $8.59 I think this deserves to be called an introduction to atheism. The writing is very light, succinct, and pertinent to thereal world. It is not a screed against organized religion.
|
![]() | Ricky Gervais Presents: The World of Karl Pilkington by Karl Pilkington
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $3.74 It's funny, but if you've heard the radio show and/or the podcasts, save your money. The whole thing is essentially a "greatest hits" from these projects (i.e. transcripts). There is a smattering of original material by Karl, but it's hardly worth $15.
