Editorial Reviews

Review
College Cuisine is the ideal cookbook for any young person beginning independent living. It contains all the basic information one needs to furnish a kitchen, stock a pantry, cook nutritiously for oneself, and entertain others -- all at a modest cost. The author assumes no pre-existing knowledge or talent, and makes the learning process easier by providing a glossary of cooking terms, safety tips, shopping advice, and substitution tables. To ensure that nothing goes to waste, there is a listing of the shelf life of many products, recipes for perishables and leftovers, and many practical tips scattered throughout the book. There are more than 150 recipes, which cover all the usual categories. All the recipes specify preparation and cooking times, and list ingredients in both metric and imperial measures. Most have icons indicating main characteristics, such as cheap, fast, microwavable, vegetarian, and good for crowds. A coiled binding enables the book to lie flat when in use. -- Canadian Book Review Annual, Arlene Gryfe, nutiritionist/dietician

Don't let students leave home without this cookbook. (It) is at once a basic, thrifty, sensible cookbook. If you have a son, daughter, niece, nephew, or someone you love leaving home who is going to look after themselves for the first time, give them a good start with a copy of College Cuisine. -- Della Radcliffe, Home Ec., FarmLife

There is, indeed, life after take-out pizza. College Cuisine is a user-friendly cookbook of easy, fast, cheap, nutritious recipes ...with some costing pennies per serving. -- Montreal Gazette

Exellent book for clueless cooks5
I love this book! I'm in college, and although I consider myself to be an experienced cook, this book rocks! Peltosaari has included tips for food storage, using leftovers, shelf life, and cooking terms in addition to the many easy recipes. All of the recipes are economical, nutritious, and delicious. If you don't even know how to make scrambled eggs, or if you're on a tight budget (like me!) then this is the book for you!

Great starter cookbook!5
What a lifesaver to be able to pick up a book for my son going off to college that was exactly right for his needs. He had no idea about cooking terms, shelf life for foods, how to shop, clean up or what equipment to use. I especially liked the idea that there was a list of how to fix mistakes, which we are sure will happen! Hopefully he will read about how to avoid wasting leftovers. This book is perfect, geared for anyone with no previous cooking experience, and is great for anyone on a tight budget or those cooking for one. He liked the minute meals, since he has no patience to wait for food to cook, and would naturally go for frozen or junk food. With this book there is hope he will eat something healthy.

delicious food5
This is a fantastic book; I've had it for many years and I use it all the time. The author makes simple recipes out of totally ordinary ingredients. She finds new twists for common ingredients, that bring out all the flavor and make it exciting to try things out. The recipes are so approacheable, because they're so easy. You'll keep using it, because the food is so tasty.
