![]() | Osprey Talon 44 Mountaineering Backpack
Buy new: $120.32 - $159.00 In '03 I got myself an Osprey Aether 60, this pack was great except for the small side pockets and the fact that I had to modify it to carry a Camelback bladder. To me the Talon 44 is the descendent of that model (the new one looks and feels overbearing). The Talon still lacks the roomy side pockets, but it has a compartment for a water bladder and (not that it matters) has a cool appearance.

![]() | Johnson S C Inc 65645 Ziploc Big Bags
Buy new: $10.99 For toiletries and clothing items, travel documents and electronics to keep them dry.
|
![]() | ExOfficio Men's Give-N-Go Boxer Brief
Buy new: $19.99 - $25.00 I've heard they have changed these a bit, but my three pair are the only pair of underwear that I have. They keep the boy comfortable, but controlled and cool in the summer, while providing warmth in the chilly months. These things have not worn out no matter what I has done (rock climbing, surfing, running, cycling, busting a move).

![]() | Smartwool Expedition Trekking Sock 10 131
Buy new: $12.57 - $19.95 Keeps the toes warm, ultra comfy day after day and they dry really quick. The wool helps keep the stinky micro bacteria from getting a foothold (pardon the pun) on your socks. Sadly your feet will still stink though, so trim your toe nails once a week. Get two or three pairs and they will last forever. Also get them in different colors to mix things up.
|
![]() | Levi's Men's 505 Regular Fit Jean
Buy new: $22.00 - $55.00 Jeans. So simple and yet so versatile. In my travels I only brought one pair of jeans, in fact I am wearing them right now. By whatever cut suits your style, and I always recommend going with a dark color because the colors fade and dark jeans can fit into any situation (farming, construction, hiking, clubbing and climbing).
|
![]() | prAna Men's Stretch Zion Short
Buy new: $47.96 - $59.95 I can't remember the original shorts I had when I set off, but I eventually got these sent to me in a care package from my dad and they are perfect. I used them for rock climbing in Greece, surfing in France and trekking in Rwanda.
|
![]() | Icebreaker Men's Bodyfit200 Lite Leggings with Fly
Buy new: $74.95 - $74.99 Don't go a winter without them. So comfortable and so warm, thye kept my legs and my good bits warm in Beijing.
|
![]() | Teva Men's Mush Flip Flop
Buy new: $14.40 - $27.00 Don't make this more complicated than necessary. Use them for lounging, showering and at the beach and short trips in town. If you use them for hiking you are missing the purpose of the sandal and wasting your money on the boots.
|
![]() | Hanes Men's Classic Basic Crew, Three Pack
Buy new: $9.99 - $17.49 The basic white t. I can't find a better shirt that is 1) More comfrotable at this price. 2) So useful in any situation (bumming it up, walking around on a hot day, a great base layer for colder climates). 3) Compliments the dark jeans.
This is my go to shirt for any siuation!

![]() | Icebreaker Men's Bodyfit260 Mid-Weight Long Sleeve Crew Top
Buy new: $55.97 - $89.99 I got this as a present from a friend of mine that was in the Army and stationed in Korea. This shirt is awesome, it kept me warm in the blood freezing cold of a Beijing winter yet it was breathable enough to let me walk around in Israel during the summer and it never stinks!
|
![]() | Van Heusen Men's Long Sleeve Wrinkle Free Poplin Fitted Solid Shirt
Buy new: $24.99 Have one in black and white. These shirts are essential for looking semi professional if meeting with officials or for going out for a night on the town.
|
![]() | MIR Men's 100% Cashmere Three Stripes Scarf
Look around for a good scarf, in the winter these things own. Honestly they will keep you so much warmer than you'd think and they take up less space than a bulky 3 season coat.
A girl in Italy showed me the joy of owning a scarf in winter. She also made me jealous of the fact that women can have pashmina's while men can not. We live in a cruel world.

![]() | Stearns .10mm Rainjammer Poncho
Buy new: $5.47 - $8.29 A poncho has saved me from some major grief while in Rwanada. I was camping outside and was told by some locals not to expect rain. Well close two in the morning it started to pour down at the time I was using a hammock and not a tent, so I grabbed some duct tape and quickly attached my poncho to my hammock and stayed dry the rest of the night.

![]() | Apple iPod shuffle 1 GB Silver (2nd Generation) OLD MODEL
Buy new: $199.99 / Used from: $31.99 My mother sent me this as a birthday present when it first came out, this thing replaced my 1st gen iPod . The shuffle last a long time. I would pop it on during rides through long stretches of desert and it would still last for another week before needing a charge.
|
![]() | Reliance Products PUR Clean Drinking Water Kit
Buy new: $14.99 - $17.53 I used to use a water filter (iodine gives me a queasy feeling), but my brother who is friends with someone who works for PUR gave him some samples of this product, which of course he passed along to me and all I have to say is, 'WOW!'. I've just got the packets and I use my own kit, but I'm sure this one is packable.
|
![]() | Adventure Medical Kits Ultralight & Watertight .7 (6.5oz)
Buy new: $21.99 Minus a few gashes I got while in Japan, this kit took care of all the scrapes and aches I encountered while traveling, it also had enough space to carry my sewing kit. You should put your insurance card in here and other medicinal items you need.
|
![]() | Rick Steves 62" Travel Towel
Buy new: $26.96 - $30.53 Any microfiber towel will do. These things dry quick and absorb so much water it's unbeleivable. Just ensure you dry them before storing them because they can grow mold on them.
|
![]() | Swiss Tech Micro-Light Ultra LED Flashlight
Buy new: $4.00 This thing is also a must have. I've used this from working in my bike in the middle of night on a back road to reading a book at night in a hostel that cut it's power off at 11pm.
If you can find one at a good price get one that has a red and white led. The red helps keep the brightness down if reading in a room where other people are trying to sleep.

![]() | Gorilla Tape 6035182 2-Inch by 35-Yard Tape Roll, Black
Buy new: $11.48 I used gaffers tape on my trip, but a friend of mine from the US embassy in Greece gave me a roll of this as he saw my roll of tape had diminished to a shallow ring. Boy was I impressed with this stuff. It has a grip like a tic weld and is almost impervious to the elements. I wish I had this stuff at the start of my trip. Very useful.

|
![]() | TRAIL TECH 25
Buy new: $9.99 A leatherman is a great item to bring along, although it's a pain sometimes because you have to check in your luggage if you have it, so it conflicts with my philosphy of why I'm packing the way I do.
|
![]() | Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2 SL-II Aspherical Compact Pancake Manual Focus Normal Lens for Pentax Film & Digital Cameras
Buy new: $379.00 Best lens ever if you ask me.
|
![]() | Apple MacBook MB881LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop
Buy new: $1,119.99 / Used from: $799.00 I know there are cheaper laptops and you could go without this all together if you were inclined, but I really needed this because I would write stories and send them off to different travel/adventure magazines and newsletters.
|
![]() | Teton Sports Celsius XL 0-Degree Sleeping Bag
Buy new: $54.60 - $57.36 The sleeping bag can be used as a pillow, picinic blanket or for shade. This is probably the first tiem I would take off the list.
