Used and Rare: Travels in the Book WorldUsed and Rare: Travels in the Book World by Lawrence Goldstone
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.05
The book that got me started on my passion for books about books. The trilogy by the Goldstones are not only charming (they've been described as the "Year in Provence" for book collectors) but so engrossing and packed with esoterica and book lore that it makes it difficult to put them down!

The thrid book of the trilogy. Anyone who's ever wanted a glimpse into the Library of Congress will want to read this, as the Goldstones describe their foray into the massive collection (try millions!) of books.
Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common ReaderEx Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader by Anne Fadiman
Buy new: $8.64 / Used from: $0.56
Often hilarious, often poignant, always interesting, these essays by writer Anne Fadiman are a must. Fadiman offers many insights into books, things I had never considered.
So Many Books, So Little Time: A Year of Passionate ReadingSo Many Books, So Little Time: A Year of Passionate Reading by Sara Nelson
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $0.01
Author Sara Nelson decides to read a book a week for the year and this is a log of her experiences. Though well-written and certainly entertaining, most of the books Nelson reads are the mainstream novels with more hype than good content.

Sixpence HouseSixpence House by Paul Collins
Buy used from: $1.50
A fantastic memoir. Author Paul Collins details his move to a small Welsh village called Hay-on-Wye, famous for being a "Town of Books" -the tiny village that has forty different bookstores specializing in everything under the sun. He meets the local eccentrics- and their books.
84, Charing Cross Road84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff
Buy new: $9.36 / Used from: $2.08
My undisputed favorite book about books. Helene Hanff, a starving writer in New York began corresponding with a booksop in London when she couldn't find a lot of English literature in print. The correspondence and friendship with bookseller Frank Doel lasted twenty years, until Doel's death. You will fall in love with Helene Hanff's wit, kind heart, and the sheer expression of her love of books.

Fantastic film version of the book. Anne Bancroft is amazing as Helene Hanff.

Buy new: $12.71 / Used from: $3.10
Memoir of lengendary bookseller Sylvia Beach, whose bookshop Shakespeare and Co. catered to Hemingway, Joyce, and others of the Lost Generation in 1920s Paris. Fascinating look into the book-buying habits and personal lives of Beach's illustrious customers, as well as a record of her own amazing life.
At Home with Books: How Booklovers Live with and Care for Their LibrariesAt Home with Books: How Booklovers Live with and Care for Their Libraries by Estelle Ellis

Be prepared to drool! Gorgeous photographs of some of the world's most abundant and beautiful home libraries, from writers to aristocracy to Rolling Stones' member Keith Richards...you can spend hours poring over the details in these pictures, picking out book titles and small curiosities.
Decorating with Books (House Beautiful)Decorating with Books (House Beautiful) by Marie Proeller Hueston
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $7.93
Very nice photos of book-laden rooms, but the text is inane and shallow. One suggestion is to buy red-bound books willy-nilly to use as color-coordinated props in your glam home. As poet Robert Southey said: "Books are the furniture of the rich."

How Reading Changed My LifeHow Reading Changed My Life by Anna Quindlen
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $0.01
Best-selling writer Anna Quindlen reminiscences about the books of her childhood. A sweet little volume.
Parnassus on Wheels (Common Reader Editions)Parnassus on Wheels (Common Reader Editions) by Christopher Morley
Buy used from: $2.01
I found this novel and its sequel The Haunted Bookshop by sheer accident- and I felt that they were something special. The main character is a little bald-headed bookseller who roams rural America in his mobile book shop, spouting pithy bookish expressions and trying to bring literature into people's lives. A funny and down-to-earth story.
The Haunted Bookshop (Common Reader Editions)The Haunted Bookshop (Common Reader Editions) by Christopher Morley
Buy used from: $1.50
Sequel to Parnassus on Wheels. Roger Mifflin, the little bookseller, has retired his mobile shop and is running The Haunted Bookshop in NYC. This is my favorite of the two; it manages to be philosophical and whimsically fun at the same time, with quite an adventerous plot.
Bachelor Brothers' Bed & BreakfastBachelor Brothers' Bed & Breakfast by Bill Richardson
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.01
Bibliophilic bachelor brothers run a B&B where their guests can have a quiet retreat in which to read good books. Local eccentrics, Mrs. Rochester the foul-mouthed parrot, The Ghost of Mother, and the Bachelor Brothers thmselves will delight. Interspersed throughout the novel are great lists of books and recipes. A must-read!

And don't forget the sequel!
Booked to Die (Cliff Janeway Novels)Booked to Die (Cliff Janeway Novels) by John Dunning
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
First mystery in the Cliff Janeway series. Janeway leaves the police force to become a bookseller and gets involved in a mystery of stolen First Editions. I have mixed feeling about this book; the writing's not too hot and takes too long to get into it, BUT the plot's interesting and the ending is good. This is considered a classic of the "Biblio Mystery" genre and should be read accordingly.
Murder in Volume (Prime Crime Mysteries)Murder in Volume (Prime Crime Mysteries) by D. R. Meredith
Buy used from: $0.01
Fun Biblio Mystery about a mystery-reading book group who solves a murder. The main protaganists, a firebrand libraraian and a laid-back professor are very likeable, as are the other characters. Murder in Volume is followed by several sequels, but they disappointingly veer away from the "Biblio Mystery" genre.
Miss Zukas and the Library Murders (Miss Zukas Mysteries)Miss Zukas and the Library Murders (Miss Zukas Mysteries) by Jo Dereske
Buy used from: $0.06
Introducing the hilariously prim librarian Miss Zukas and her six-foot tall bohemian friend Ruth who solve quite a few murders in this book and its sequels. My favorite Biblio mysteries.
The Ghost and Mrs. McClure (Haunted Bookshop Mystery)The Ghost and Mrs. McClure (Haunted Bookshop Mystery) by Alice Kimberly
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.87
Another Biblio mystery, this time involving a ghost who haunts a mystery bookshop. The ghost used to be a tough-talkin' P.I. like Mike Hammer or Sam Spade, but unfortunately he got snuffed. Though the ghost is quite a character, the other aspects of this book and its sequels are contrived. Good for a one-time read.
Fahrenheit 451Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
What happens when you set the P.C. police on books? They get banned...and burned. A marvelous futuristic novel that shows what would happen if we became a world without books. Scary, with a true and urgent message.
