Product Description

The SCHOLASTIC FIRST PICTURE DICTIONARY contains more than 800 words and pictures carefully chosen and organized by specialists in order to facilitate first-time readers. Five characters take the reader through a variety of beautiful, realistic, thematic settings. Furthermore, the magic of transparent pages animates each world, including a home, school, downtown, supermarket, farm, beach, and mountainside. The Dictionary is made interactive by frequent riddles whose answers relate to words found on the same page.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2–According to the front cover, this book includes more than 800 words and pictures by 16 illustrators. Topics include bodies, houses, schools, cities, shopping, and nature. Each page is bordered along its outside vertical edge. Periodic questions, or riddles, encourage viewers to think about what they are seeing by looking for specific things on the pages. Some pictures are confusing, mainly because they are not drawn to scale. On one page, a pebble is as big as the rock above it. Items supposedly located in a broom closet include a floor mat that looks like a kitchen towel, rubber gloves that are flesh toned and look like hands, and a sewing machine, among other things. Each chapter opens with a transparent overlay that changes the look of the pages on the spread as they are flipped from side to side. Some of these pages are too busy, with such small and undefined illustrations that it is difficult to see them clearly. Stick with what you have.–Kathleen Simonetta, Indian Trails Public Library District, Wheeling, IL

Best Book!5
We bought this for my son for his 3rd birthday. He LOVES it. He looks at it everyday (his birthday was 6 months ago). He also has to have it in his bed every night. It keeps him busy at restaurants and in the car as well. Whenever someone comes to visit, he runs for the book so he can sit with the person and look at it. I highly recommend it!

They love pointing at all the pictures and learning new words5
I picked this book up on a whim at Toys R Us for my twins' 2nd birthday. Since they got it (a month ago) it's been almost constantly in use. They love to point to the pictures and name them and to learn the words they don't know. It's one of the best illustrated books of its type that I've seen, with real words (at least what I call them in my northeast US speech). This was a great inexpensive purchase. Highly recommended for all toddlers.
