Fun Kazoo
I have a collection of Kazoos and "onion" or "eunuch" flutes made from many materials, MANY of them wood. I purchased several of these to engage children at Renaissance Faire in the fine art of making music. They are very inexpensive so I could give one to each child to keep.
The trick with a kazoo is to use it properly. you need to hum and blow lightly into the mouthpiece, and NOT just blow. In fact, I teach kids to put their lips to the instrument and try to talk without removing their lips. This works amazingly, and induces much giggling!
As for the sterilization issue, I just wipe off my wood kazoos with lemon juice, just like I do my wooden cutting boards!
a great little instrument
When my toddler started chewing the paint off a metal kazoo I knew we needed an alternative. Like all other Melissa & Doug toys we've tried, their kazoo seems both well-conceived and durably constructed. It is fabricated from two pieces of wood the length of the instrument solidly glued together with a hole bored for the membrane to vibrate. The soft wood does accumulate teeth marks from my little chewer. However, since the wood is unfinished I am not concerned about him ingesting anything other than cellulose.
It is quieter than a standard metal kazoo. In the hands of a little musician, that can be a good thing.
Doesn't sound like a kazoo
I was excited to purchase a wood kazoo, thinking it would better for my 1 1/2 because it wasn't plastic. But it just doesn't sound good.
