Fried food is comfort food--think French fries, doughnuts, or shrimp tempura--and almost everyone craves it at some time or another. But it can be kind of messy to make at home. The Presto CoolDaddy electric deep fryer is an easy-to-use, self-contained frying unit, so there's practically no mess. The hinged lid with its large viewing window eliminates spattering altogether, while a mesh charcoal filter keeps odors to a minimum. The CoolDaddy fits easily on most kitchen countertops, and its look is compatible with a variety of kitchen styles. It's made of off-white, stay-cool plastic with modern contours and gray-and-blue accents.

The removable nonstick oil pot holds up to eight cups of oil or four pounds of shortening, and can accommodate up to six servings of food at a time. A sliding thermostat button allows the oil to be heated up to the optimum frying temperature of 375 degrees F. An indicator light to the left of the handle goes off when the oil has reached the desired temperature. The frying basket's handle extends and locks to lift food in and out; fold it down neatly for storage or to lower the food into the oil. (That can be done with the lid closed, so there's no spattering at all!) The power cord has a magnetic safety connection, so that if the unit is jostled during cooking, the cord will disconnect, shutting power off immediately.

After frying, unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely before attempting to empty oil. Wash the removable pot and frying basket in warm water with mild detergent and a nonabrasive sponge or cloth. The cool-touch plastic base is not immersible; wipe with a damp cloth to clean. The lid gasket is removable and should be cleaned periodically. The mesh charcoal filter should be replaced after approximately 10 to 15 uses. This is really a decent fryer for the money!
Like everyone it seems, I used to have a Fry Daddy and I seldom used it because of all of its many drawbacks. Kudos to Presto for designing this fryer to accommodate the average home cook's wishes. I love this fryer because it is a 'closed' unit. By that, I mean that while the food is frying the lid can (and should) remain closed - thus eliminating the splatter mess and at least some of the odor. Mine came with a replacable charcoal filter in the lid which presumably aids in cutting some of the oily smell. I cannot say that there is no odor with this unit, but the tradeoff was that it didn't cost four hundred dollers either! As for the temperature regulation, I usually fill my fryer to the max fill line every time so as to achieve the maximum 'mass' of hot oil possible. By setting the thermostat at the max (375 degrees) and giving it ten minutes or so to heat up properly, I have had no trouble frying respectable amounts of french fries, cod, and appetizers to golden perfection. The only drawback to this unit is that for a family of four, the size is a bit limiting. I tried to fry four battered fish filets at once and the top two weighed down the bottom two and they stuck rather badly to the fry basket (quite a mess!).

Other than the size drawback, we love this machine. It cooks well, cleans easily, stores nicely, and the price was very reasonable. Are there better fryers on the market? Of course, but for me their price was prohibitave. All in all, I feel that this is a very servicable appliance and a good value for the money.

GREAT FRYER!
Only drawback is that you can not see your food cooking as it states that you can; otherwise, I think this is a great fryer. Easy clean-up and storing of oil in removable pot. I highly recommend.

Better than expected!!!
I bought the Presto Cool Daddy on sale at a very low cost and thought I would be getting what I paid out of it. Boy was I wrong! It was much better than I expected! The oil heats up in no time, so I can get started quicker! It stays hot (no I didn't measure the exact temp, but I didn't feel I needed to) It is very deep and larger than other brands I looked at. I must have cooked a dozen items in it my first week and have been very pleased with each outcome! I highly recommend the AFFORDABLE Cool Daddy!
