Customer Reviews

Troublesome and poor quality prints2
On the surface, The Lexmark X5470 looks like a great deal; it is a copier, printer, scanner and fax too. It also has an automatic document feeder and can print pictures directly from the memory card thru the built in PicBridge port and media card slot, however, you need a special photo color cartridge in place of the black ink cartridge. You can copy / scan /fax using the flat bed or the document feeder. All that at around $80. But the good stuff ends there.
Print quality is poor, picture quality is even worse; and it uses ink like there is no tomorrow, expect around 150 pages before the Lexmark starts telling you to order new ink cartridge. If you want to get a generic or refilled ink cartridge, the Lexmark does not like that, and it will keep telling you that it's out of original ink. You may even get an error message to change the cartridge and the machine will stop working until you do so. In short, you will have to use the original Lexmark ink cartridges at around $50 for the pair.
The most annoying thing is the "clear carrier jam" message, which keeps coming even though there is no "jam" anywhere in the machine. To clear it, you will have to turn it off, unplug it, remove both ink cartridges, plug it again, turn it on, reinstall the cartridges, and keep your fingers crossed that this will clear it. If not, try again.
Will I buy it again? Never. Would I recommend it? No way.
Lexmark: I hope you do better next time.

Vista Owners Beware!1
I spent the better part of my last weekend at home before college fighting with this printer. As a Vista owner, I have grown accustomed to the shudders and signs of the cross whenever I tell computer store employees I have a Vista machine. I have NOT, however, grown accustomed to companies claiming their machine is Vista compatible when in truth it acts as little more than a glorified paperweight. I purchased this from a local Staples specifically because it was VISTA COMPATIBLE.

When I got home, I followed the instructions to the letter. When I printed the test page, I grew worried due to how long it took the page to print. It's activity can be summarized as this: "PRIIIIIINT............ PRIIIIINT............................PRINTPRINT............" and so forth and so on. Growing ever more nervous, I checked online to see if there was someone who knew what was wrong. I spent two hours with one Lexmark support member via their chat service, trying everything short of sacrificing a lamb to God - I mean, Bill Gates - to get it to work. The next morning, I woke up hoping it was a bad dream. No such luck, and so there went another 4 hours spent with various support personnel.

I finally threw in the towel and flipped the bird to Lexmark this morning when I stumbled across a series of forum posts around the internet warning me that no matter what Lexmark claims, their printers are NOT, I repeat NOT compatible with Vista. I ended up purchasing a printer from Best Buy made by HP. Guess how many times I had to install it? ONCE. It worked right out of the box like a charm, and is a beautiful piece of hardware.

On the bright side, it worked well on my XP laptop when I needed to print. However, since that was not why I purchased it, I can only give it one star.

great little machine5
We've had this printer for about 8 months now and have never had a problem with it. It does everything we need and for a price much less than other all-in-ones we considered. Yes, the ink cartridges are a bit expensive but, I've found that to be the case with all printers.

I frequently use the printer for photographs and, using the photo ink cartridge and high quality photo paper, the picture quality is as good as that of commercially printed photos. At this price, I don't think you can find a better machine.
