The boys are back in town and more clueless than ever in their second collection. For this three-disc set, Mike Judge raided from seasons five and six. Throughout these short films, Beavis and "the brown-haired guy" break stuff ("Stewart Moves Away"), draw stuff ("Animation Sucks"), and mess stuff up ("Premature Evacuation"). They also adopt a crazed canine ("Bad Dog") and sign up with a dating service ("Vidiots"), among other high-spirited hijinks. As in The Simpsons, the neighing ninnies never age (they're still 14), and, as in The Peanuts, parents are mostly MIA. Recurring characters include terminally uncool buddy Stewart, caustic classmate Daria, sadistic bully Todd, gullible neighbor Mr. Anderson, diametrically opposed teachers Buzzcut and Van Driessen (one's uptight, the other's laidback), and jittery Principal McVicker. Let's not forget Beavis alter-ego Cornholio and his burning desire for "TP." After a shot of an espresso, he's back for the attack in "Buttniks." Then after a few bites of Halloween candy, he rises again for fan favorite "Bungholio: Lord of the Harvest." For all the scatological shenanigans, there's always been a certain sadness to Beavis and Butt-head. In "Bus Trip," for instance, B&B reveal themselves—and not for the first time—as functional illiterates, while in "Stewart is Missing," they make his mother cry. If they didn't have each other, they would surely be the loneliest boys in cartoon land. Aside from the 40 shorts, Volume Two includes 13 videos with commentary. The most appropriate: "If I Only Had a Brain" by MC 900 Ft. Jesus. Featuring the voice talents of David Spade ("Candy Sale") and Bobcat Goldthwait ("Party," "Beavis, Can You Spare a Dime?"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Customer Reviews
This DVD set is missing a lot of good episodes.
Firstly, let's start off with the 5 stars that Beavis and Butt-Head deserves. Beavis and Butt-Head was great television that pushed the edge of the envelope. It was excellent so we'll start with a five star rating. Unfortunately some decisions on the part of the DVD producers detract from that...
Selling the DVDs in 'best of' format rather than all the episodes in a format that preserves the broadcast timeline is, in my opinion, a mistake. As other reviewers have pointed out, Mike Judge's 'best episodes' aren't necessarily mine. Then there's the fact that 68 episodes are completely missing - that amounts to just over one third of Beavis and Butt-head that didn't make it into this set. Two stars removed for a flawed format that is very disappointing for those of us who want to see every Beavis & Butt-Head episode in its proper context.
Also, the deletion of certain lines of dialogue from certain episodes is absolutely wrong. Those of us who appreciated ALL the writing have been swindled. One star removed for this awful decision.
Finally, in my opinion, separating the music videos out and adding them as extras is a great solution to a difficult problem. Some of us disliked the music videos while some liked them. Then there's the problem of obtaining copyright. This method satisfies everyone as much as possible. We get to see the show without the distraction of the videos while those who enjoyed the music videos get to see them. One star added for this excellent decision. I only wish every decision made by the producers of this DVD box set was as intelligent as this one.
So all-in-all 3 stars.
Here are all the episodes that The Mike Judge Collection doesn't include in the order they aired:
Peace Love & Understanding, Blood Drive, Door-To-door, Sign Here, Balloon, Customers Suck, Heroes, Stewart's House, Yogurt's Cool, Babes R Us, Friday Night, Scientific Stuff, At The Sideshow, Be All You Can Be, Burger World, Bedpans And Broomsticks, Good Credit, Way Down Mexico Way, For Better Or Verse, Beware Of The Butt, At The Movies, Sick, Baby Makes Uh - Three, The Butt-Head Experience, Comedians, Car Wash, Couch-Fishing, Kidnapped, Naked Colony, Tornado, Incognito, Cleaning House, Scratch 'N' Win, Scared Straight, Sperm Bank, Citizen Butt-Head, True Crime, The Trial, Ball Breakers, Buff 'N' Stuff, Canoe, Eating Contest, Foreign Exchange, Beavis And Butt-Head Meet God, Young Gifted & Crude, Politically Correct, Sporting Goods, Closing Time, Wall Of Youth, Cow Tipping, Trouble Urinating, Jump!, Pumping Iron, Let's Clean It Up, Water Safety, Beavis And Butt-Head's Island, Crisis Line, Beard Boys, Hard Sell, Walking Erect, Career Day, Take A Number, To The Rescue, I Dream Of Beavis, Screamers, Skin Trade, The Mystery Of Morning Wood.
Some of these are classic episodes. In my opinion to omit any of them is a crime, especially considering that the true fans of the show have waited years hoping for ALL of B&B to finally be published.
No edits made to episodes in this volume
Unlike the first volume, where Mike Judge edited dialogue bits out of more than half the episodes, the dreaded "director's cuts" are nowhere to be found. Some reviewers here have suggested that this volume also contains altered versions of the cartoons, but all that is missing from them (as usual) are the music videos. The harsh fan reaction regarding the edited first volume apparently got back to Mike Judge, because he made the right decision to keep this batch in their original form.
Contrary to some reviewers' claims, even after Volume 3 all the episodes will not have been released to DVD. Mike Judge has made it clear that Volumes 1-3 will contain roughly two-thirds of the total episodes. He considers the rest to be too poor to be included.
I happen to agree with Mike Judge that, generally speaking, the later episodes are actually better than the earlier ones. But I still strongly disagree with his decision to leave approximately one third of the episodes unreleased.
I'm glad the episodes collected here are complete. As for the bonus features, they are okay - I'm not sure there's really enough to justify the third disc. The main featurette (Taint of Greatness Pt 2) is only about 20 minutes long - several minutes shorter than part one - and is very heavy on episode clips. The selection of music videos is probably the only feature that most people will return to.
For those who have the Time-Life DVDs, you will find many duplicate episodes (though not quite as many as with the first volume).
This DVD rules!
Fans will be happy to hear that creator Mike Judge has not made any cuts to the episodes that comprise volume 2! As Beavis would says, "Cuts suck! THEY SUCK, SUCK, SUCK!"
