From Booklist
Gr. 6-12. Striking a tone that is conversational and warm without being condescending, this title in the new Sunscreen series offers solid, reassuring advice for readers weathering parental divorce. The text, organized into sections that roughly address the stages of divorce--from "the weird atmosphere" of tension preceding a breakup to new families that form when parents remarry--gives equally sensitive coverage to the emotional tumult young people may experience and the logistics of divorce itself: the gritty vocabulary (the difference between "fault" and "no-fault") and what happens in family court. The quirky, stylized acrylic paintings enhance the upbeat, supportive messages without downplaying the seriousness of the topic. Although the authors say it's just fine to yell and show anger toward parents, they remind readers to take responsibility for their own happiness: "Pick out the best from everything you've seen, and . . . make the best life for yourself going forward." Other titles in the series cover sex, friendship, and social pressure. Gillian Engberg
