Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential video
Having proven itself as a favorite film of children around the world, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is every bit as entertaining now as it was when originally released in 1971. There's a timeless appeal to Roald Dahl's classic children's novel, which was playfully preserved in this charming musical, from the colorful carnival-like splendor of its production design to the infectious melody of the "Oompah-Loompah" songs that punctuate the story. Who can forget those diminutive Oompah-Loompah workers who recite rhyming parental warnings ("Oompah-Loompah, doopity do...") whenever some mischievous child has disobeyed Willy Wonka's orders to remain orderly? Oh, but we're getting ahead of ourselves ... it's really the story of the impoverished Charlie Bucket, who, along with four other kids and their parental guests, wins a coveted golden ticket to enter the fantastic realm of Wonka's mysterious confectionery. After the other kids have proven themselves to be irresponsible brats, it's Charlie who impresses Wonka and wins a reward beyond his wildest dreams. But before that, the tour of Wonka's factory provides a dazzling parade of delights, and with Gene Wilder giving a brilliant performance as the eccentric candyman, Wonka gains an edge of menace and madness that nicely counterbalances the movie's sentimental sweetness. It's that willingness to risk a darker tone--to show that even a wonderland like Wonka's can be a weird and dangerous place if you're a bad kid--that makes this an enduring family classic. --Jeff Shannon

granddaughter very happy
My granddaughter Casey was very excited to receive this as we had been looking in stores for a very long time and sure enough Amazon.com came through. Thank you.
A magical masterpiece!
Poor boy Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) has a poor family whom he helps out as he does his everyday job after school by selling newspapers and earning money to feed and help his family. One day the famed candymaker Willy Wonka who creates the most amazing and delicious candies in the world as he reopens his factory, he sends out five golden tickets in Wonka Bars as everyone in the world searches for the tickets. Charlie wants to win that ticket so badly even though he barely buys chocolate, but fortunately he finds one of the golden tickets which makes his dream come true. The prize is a tour of the legendary and mysterious Wonka factory where the other winners (Julie Dawn Cole, Paris Themmen, Denise Nickerson and Michael Bollner) including Charlie and his Grandpa Joe (Jack Albertson) get the tour of a lifetime as they meet the magical and unique Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) himself shows them a world of edible stuff, chocolate rivers, one trippy boat trip and the secrets of Wonka's success.
A magical and entertaining masterpiece of a movie that is one of the most beloved fantasy-musical fantasy movies since "The Wizard of Oz". This is one of those timeless movies that still appeals to both kids and adults alike with it's witty humor, great performances and memorable music score! Roland Dahl wrote the screenplay even though it's loose to the original book he wrote. The film is a pop culture icon that is inspiring and unique even with it's unforgettable songs and memorable quotes, it's a classic.
This DVD offers a widescreen presenation with great picture and sound quality with great extras like two featurettes, audio commentary, 4 sing-along songs, trailer and photo gallery.
DVD Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
I needed this DVD for my 8 year old for her acting class. I ordered it at 6PM at night and received it before 10AM the next morning...and we live in a small town in the country! The tape had no flaws and we're extremely please with it and the quick delivery.
