The Simple Guide to Fresh Water Aquariums (Simple Guide to...)The Simple Guide to Fresh Water Aquariums (Simple Guide to...) by David E. Boruchowitz
Buy used from: $3.00
This got great reviews (although I have never read it) and it is a good idea to learn a little about your tank before you set up. You will definitely want to consider the types of fish you would like, the conditions/food they need, the types of decor you would like etc. before purchasing anything.
Perfect-A-Lite Full Hood, 30" BlackPerfect-A-Lite Full Hood, 30" Black
Buy new: $41.99
This hood will give your new aquarium the light it needs and help keep warmth inside.
29-37 Gallon Aquarium Stand 8079629-37 Gallon Aquarium Stand 80796
With your new tank you will need a stand (preferably one made to with hold the weight of a full tank). This stand is both nice looking and functional. The simple handles are actually a darker brushed metal finish and fit perfectly into my home's decor. The 2 doors easily fit all my aquarium supplies.
30" X 18" UNDERGRAVEL FILTER (56 COLUMN)30" X 18" UNDERGRAVEL FILTER (56 COLUMN)
Buy new: $36.50
Next you will need to think about filtration of water. Aquarium undergravel filters filter your water through your gravel, so if you opt for this filter, you will also need an underwater vacuum.
Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Rena Air 400 Aquarium Air PumpAquarium Pharmaceuticals Rena Air 400 Aquarium Air Pump
Buy new: $51.87
No offense to Amazon, but this is way over priced. You can find these anywhere for a lot cheaper. However, you will need one for use with your underwater filter. (You will also need tubing, but I will add that separately.)
Flexible Airline Tubing - 8 ft. lengthFlexible Airline Tubing - 8 ft. length
Buy new: $4.19
This is the air tubing that you will need to connect your air pump to your undergravel filter.
Python Pro-Clean Gravel Vac w/ 6' Hose 16" TubePython Pro-Clean Gravel Vac w/ 6' Hose 16" Tube
To properly clean your tank you will need to assist your under gravel filter with a gravel vacuum.
THEO UL Heater 200WTHEO UL Heater 200W
Buy new: $26.14
Most fish will need a slightly warmer environment than room temperature (68ºF).
Liquid Crystal ThermometerLiquid Crystal Thermometer
Buy new: $7.00
These flat stickable thermometers have always worked for me. Make sure to stick them on the outside of the tank on the opposite side of the heater. This way you can accurately determine the average temp of the whole tank.
Stress Coat, 64 ozStress Coat, 64 oz
Buy new: $19.99
Essential for moving fish, changing water, adding fish, etc. Anything that could be stressful for fish, you need to use stress coat. It neutralizes tap water and calms fish.

Creating a Natural Aquarium (Onterpet Handbooks)Creating a Natural Aquarium (Onterpet Handbooks) by Peter Hiscock
Buy new: $13.45 / Used from: $1.00
After you have the tank set up, think about decorative design. I bought this book on a whim at a discount store, and actually found it quite helpful when turning my tank from a typical aquarium to a biotope. (BTW, I found it at an Ollies Outlet for $2.99.)
Estes' Natural Aggregate Shallow Creek PebblesEstes' Natural Aggregate Shallow Creek Pebbles
Buy new: $2.19
It is recommended that you use 1 lb of gravel for every gallon of water in your tank. I use a natural looking yellow/brown stone to make my tanks environment look more realistic.
K&A Imports Lace Rock Cannon Shaped, StandardK&A Imports Lace Rock Cannon Shaped, Standard
Buy new: $24.99
I would recommend real rocks for your aquarium, but artificial rocks are ok too. I find many in the wild; just be sure to clean any "natural" rocks you find (and be sure they aren't limestone or any reactive rock; to determine this drop some vinegar on them, if it fizzes don't use it).
Cambridge Aquatics Plst Hygrophila Plant 15 InCambridge Aquatics Plst Hygrophila Plant 15 In
Buy new: $8.30
I also recommend live plants for any aquarium because they oxygenate the water, look more realistic, and provide food for your aquatic animals. However, being alive, some plants may die, your fish may eat them or other issues may arise, so to avoid all of that, fake plants work just as well as decoration.
500 Freshwater Aquarium Fish: A Visual Reference to the Most Popular Species500 Freshwater Aquarium Fish: A Visual Reference to the Most Popular Species
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $18.99
This book will allow you to decide what types of freshwater fish you would like to display. The info ranges from the very common to somewhat unusual freshwater fish. My aquarium is stocked with barbs, mollys and platys because they are colorful and easy to care for.
TetraMin Flakes, 2.20 OuncesTetraMin Flakes, 2.20 Ounces
Buy new: $6.99
Can't have fish without food for them. Tetramin boasts that it is nutritionally balanced and won't cloud water.
Hikari Tropical Algae Wafers for Plecostomus and Algae EatersHikari Tropical Algae Wafers for Plecostomus and Algae Eaters
Buy new: $7.88
I feed these wafers to my Pleco (Plecostomus), but they are great for other algae eaters as well. They are food wafers that sink to feed bottom feeders when your tank is lacking a sustainable source of algae.
Accu-Clear, 8 ozAccu-Clear, 8 oz
Buy new: $4.82
I use accu-clear when my tank starts to get cloudy (which can happen from poor cleaning maintenance or over feeding). It clumps together small particles to aid your filter in straining them out. However, this is no match to regular water changes and proper feeding.
