![]() | Bens Max Lotion 95 Deet, 1.25 oz
I did not believe the mosquitoes would be bad -- you're at 12,000 feet! But they're on the Inca Trail. Bring Deet. Wear it. Put it on before you even begin hiking.

![]() | Coleman Dry Gear Bag (Small 24" x 10")
Buy new: $8.99 We were lucky and it didn't rain during our hike. However, it's highly possible. A small dry bag will protect your camera and important gear.

![]() | Canon HV20 3MP High Definition MiniDV Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
Buy new: $1,299.95 / Used from: $699.99 I LOVE this camera! In addition to gorgeous HD video, it also shoots pretty good stills. I was able to get through the entire Trail with one extra battery. I slept with my HV20 to keep the batteries warm. I also tried not to use the LCD screen, to preserve power. I brought a protective case but ending up carabiner-ing the camera to my belt loop, as I found I was pulling it out every few minutes.

![]() | Travels by Michael Crichton
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $2.89 This book is not specifically about the Inca Trail, but it's a wonderful travel book. You'll have a little bit of downtime in the evenings, so it's nice to have a book with you.

![]() | Black Diamond Quicksilver Screwgate Carabiner
Buy new: $10.99 It's nice to have two or three of these clipped to your pack to carry odd items.
|
![]() | Petzl E49P TacTikka Plus 4-LED Headlamp, Black
Buy new: $42.95 You'll want a light headlamp, as it gets dark shortly after 6pm (you're near the equator, after all). Also, on Day 4 of the hike, you get up and hike in the dark, in order to reach the Sun Gate by sunrise. Because you're hiking with so many other people, it's kind of nice to have a headlamp that has a yellow/orange light on it so you don't blind other people.

![]() | Ice Breakers Sours, 1.5-Ounce Tins (Pack of 16)
Your guides will provide you with pretty much all the food you need, including probably a snack bag in the morning to carry with you. However, I found having a tin of Ice Breaker Sours was such a welcome treat while hiking some of the difficult sections. These taste awesome!
|
![]() | Slim Jim Giant, Mild Spicy Smoked Snacks, 0.97-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 24)
Buy new: $23.13 You won't need much food with you, but these Slim Jims are a nice burst of salt and protein when your energy is flagging.
|
![]() | Aloe Gator 13526-3 Aloe Gator - SFP 40 Lotion - 1oz - 3 Pk
Buy new: $8.99 You will definitely need sunscreen. I tried to go light and packed just one 1oz. tube, but I went through it pretty fast. For the 4-day hike, I would recommend two 1oz. tubes.
|
![]() | Huggies Cleanteam Flushable Moist Wipes Tub, Blue Melon Scent, 42 Count (Pack of 16)
Buy new: $39.99 Bring a small pack of moist wipes. In many cases, you won't be flushing them away (pack out or use trash facilities) but it's better to have the flushable kind, in case you need them somewhere else.
|
![]() | ITW Space Bag BRS-9212ZG Vacuum-Seal Travel Roll Bags, Set of 4
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $10.95 These are nice to have for any sort of backpacking. Not only do they compress your clothing, but they're waterproof -- keep dry stuff dry, or pack wet stuff away from other gear. Be sure you get the kind that roll up, not the kind that need a vacuum cleaner to suck out the air!
|
![]() | Light Hiker Outdoor Sock by Smartwool
Buy new: $15.00 I recommend bringing three pairs of socks -- one pair for Day 1 and to wear again on Day 3; another pair for Days 2 and 4; and a third pair to wear around camp. If you stay in Aguas Calientes or Ollayantaytambo after the hike, you might want yet another pair of clean, dry socks to put on.

![]() | Vox Super-Mini Spanish and English Dictionary (VOX Dictionary Series) by Vox
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01 It is likely that your trail guide will speak decent English, and your porters will probably speak only Quechua. However, unless you are fluent in Spanish, it is great to travel in Peru with a small Spanish-English dictionary.
|
![]() | Pair of Trekking Poles, Lightweight Aluminum 7075 Anti-Shock Telescopic Poles with Ergonomic Cork Grip & Foam Extension for Trekking, Hiking, Walking (Pack of 2 Poles, Carrying Bag & Accessories)
Buy new: $65.99 I am up in the air on trekking poles. I did not use them, but many did. You can buy bamboo poles before the hike (only $5) but if you're going to use poles, I would bring ones like these. Something compact so you can pack them when not in use. This trail is killer on your knees.
|
![]() | Timberland Women's Chocorua Trail Boot
Buy new: $84.95 - $114.99 I debated between light hikers and heavier boots because I didn't want the extra weight. I was glad I chose the heavier boots! You''ll want the ankle support, even if you don't have bad ankles. Waterproof is great, too. This trail surface is pretty rough.
|
![]() | Hurricane II Sandal -Ladies
Bring camp shoes that you can wear WITH SOCKS. Flip flops are light and comfortable, but your feet will likely be cold and you won't want to be barefoot.
|
![]() | Imodium A-D Anti-Diarrhea, 72-Count Caplets
Buy new: $17.89 Just in case.....prescription Cipro is also nice to have with you.
