Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $189.99
A good lens with a decent zoom range. For the price, this lens is hard to beat. Lightweight, simple and durable, this is a good "walking around", general purpose lens. With an internal focus and non-rotating zoom, the front of the lens does not rotate meaning filters, like polarizing filters, do not have to reset after focus or zoom. Do not forget the UV filter!

Low profile filter for 18-135mm lens. A real must!
Nikon C-PLII - Filter - circular polarizer - 67 mmNikon C-PLII - Filter - circular polarizer - 67 mm
Buy new: $94.33
As you might expect, Nikon optics are simply the best. This low-profile polarizer will fit the 18-135mm lens. If you do landscape or outside photography, the rotating polarizing filter will give you a richer sky, or allow you to make a lake more reflective, or transparent. I do not consider this optional for exterior photography.
Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor LensNikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens
Buy new: $669.83 / Used from: $599.99
This would be a good alternative to the 18-135mm lens as your primary lens, but it is pricey. The optics are good, but there is slight barrel distortion below 20mm. Also, when the camera is pointed straight up or down, the zoom tends to creep a little over time. The Vibration Reduction systems is really wonderful and makes a real difference. Do not forget the protection filter!

This polarizing filter will fit the Nikon 18-200 mm lens. As mentioned earlier, polarizing filters are a must for outdoor photography!

Buy new: $1,432.99
If you plan to sports or wildlife photography, this lens will give you the range and magnification to do. Internal focus and non-twisting zoom means the lens does not rotate during focus or zoom operations; a real benefit for some types of filters. It is heavy so a monopod or tripod or tripod is a must. Do not forget a UV filter!

The higher rating, 2700 mAh, gives you nearly 10% longer life than 2500 mAh without much difference in price. As the SB-800 speedlight uses either 4 batteries (5 if you use the rapid recycle feature), and the MB-D80 grip can use 6 batteries, have plenty of extra batteries.
SanDisk 2 GB SDSDX3-2048-901 Extreme III SD Memory Card (Retail Package)SanDisk 2 GB SDSDX3-2048-901 Extreme III SD Memory Card (Retail Package)
Buy new: $24.19 / Used from: $18.75
The Extreme III series has extremely fast write times and can keep up with the D80's 3 fps exposure rate. Slower cards simply cannot keep up. Also, many SD card readers are not SDHC compatible so 2GB is as large as you can go without a USB SDHC compatible reader. In RAW mode, you can get more than 150 exposures on a 2GB card. Get a couple! :-)

Buy new: $35.97 / Used from: $34.95
Again, this is a very fast SD card but at the higher 4 GB capacity. It includes a nifty little USB reader device for those devices that are not SDHC compatible. Gat a couple! :-)

Buy new: $61.24 / Used from: $89.10
The hight speed car, like all the Sandisk Extreme III card is what you really need for your D80. An 8 GB card will give you more than 600 exposures in RAW mode and thousands of exposures even at the highest quality JPEG settings. I always recommend having at 2 SD cards, but if you are using 8GB cards, I do not think you will need more than 2.
Domke 700-10S F-1X Little Bit Bigger Bag (Sand)Domke 700-10S F-1X Little Bit Bigger Bag (Sand)

This is simply the best camera bag I have ever owned. Durable, well made, well padded, accessible, and will hold the D80 with the MB-D80 power pack mounted on the camera. Your bag can get a little heavy, so I recommend the shoulder pad and suggest you consider the back-pack strap. Everything on this list will fit in this bag!

Now that you have this great SLR system, you realize it is just too bulky to grab and take shots of the kids playing in the back yard, or bring along when you meet some friends. Add this item to your camera bag and you will have that flexibility. It uses AA batteries and SD cards so you do not have to dedicate much to this.
Slik Heavy-Duty Tripod with 3-Way Fluid-Effect Head and Built-In Bubble LevelSlik Heavy-Duty Tripod with 3-Way Fluid-Effect Head and Built-In Bubble Level

A good, basic tripod that is lighter than most and can be tucked into the carrying straps of your Domke bag. Not quite strong enough if you mount the 80-400 mm lens, but a good traveling tripod.
Manfrotto 190XPROB 3 Section Aluminum Pro TripodManfrotto 190XPROB 3 Section Aluminum Pro Tripod
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $134.09
One of the best tripods around. If you can handle the weight, this one will certainly do what you need. It is much more heavy-duty than the slick, but it can handle more weight and the different heads you can get for it make controlling it a dream.

Very nice monopod. strongly recommended when using the 80-400mm lens as the higher magnification makes camera shake detectable at higher shutter speeds. You need to get a head for this.

When using the tripod for long exposures or subjects that are difficult to approach, like wildlife, being able to trip the shutter remotely is great. The long cord lets you get more than 16 feet (almost 5 meters) from the camera. This release also features a shutter lock for bulb photography.
