Product Description

With a quarter of a century behind it, Norfolk Southern is one of the oldest Class 1 railroads operating in North America. This illustrated history tells how Norfolk Southern came to be what it is today, from the merger of two of American railroadings most legendary roads-- Southern Railway and Norfolk and Western--through its rise to the heights of the worlds leading transportation companies. After a concise history of the roads that became Norfolk Southern, author Richard Borkowski explores the railroads corporate history and operating structure and details the specific operations that go into the lines customer-oriented approach, including its vast intermodal network. Along with each of Norfolk Southerns 11 operating divisions, this book offers a close look at NS motive power, a wealth of color photographs, and a specially commissioned system map.

Nicely Done4
Bought book for my husband who is a railroad enthusiast and loves Norfolk Southern. It will be a Christmas gift.

A very good overview of NS's history and operations5
I enjoyed reading this book, as both a reference guide and history book. The book starts with a brief history of Norfolk Southern's bloodlines, focusing on 1960's N&W and Southern railways, and then the Conrail acquisition. This is followed by a short chapter on the typical commodities that are carried. The bulk of the book is a very informative overview of the railway's many Divisions and districts. A final chapter covers locomotives and paint schemes, and an Appendix lists the diesel roster as of 2007.

I purchased this book with the hopes that it would help me with a Norfolk Southern-themed model railroad I'm building. There are plenty of photographs covering a variety of environments (yards, mountain cuts, bridges, etc), and the operational information is incredible. One note: the book doesn't contain any prototype drawings, but that isn't a big issue to me. The book more than met my expectations, and I consider it an invaluable reference on the modern Norfolk Southern railway.
