"My job is thinking about goofy sh--," declares George Carlin, the ever-reflective absurdist and star of George Carlin Again. The second in Carlin's long string of HBO specials since 1977, Again (1978) finds the once buttoned-down comic performing in the round and musing, as is his wont, on many vital issues of the day. What, for example, do restaurants do with the rest of a frog after cooking its legs? Who empties the coins out of wishing wells? To the delight of his Phoenix audience, Carlin also takes a detour into pop philosophy with a look at our relationship with time ("There is no 'now.' It could be the middle of last month for all we know.") and death ("Everybody gets a two-minute warning. Try to use yours to die big."). Oddly, a nostalgic reprise of the Hippie-Dippie Weatherman from Carlin's early career falls flat; the comedian senses it and segues into a more trenchant and daring bit about dirty words and American law. This is not a monologue for the faint of heart, but Carlin fanatics will be pleased. --Tom Keogh

One of Carlin's greatest performances5
This is Carlin's second HBO performance and, in my opinion, is one of the highlights of his brilliant and influential career. I personally prefer the early part of his career when he was comedy was genuinely insightful. Within the past several years, his performances have had a tendency to become grievance-driven rants. It's a kind-of "grumpy old man" persona that simply doesn't appeal to me.

As many comedy fans already know, Carlin was an absolute genius when his comedy focused on the use of language. And "The Seven Dirty Words" section is clearly the shining moment in this performance. If you want to experience Carlin in his prime, then this is an essential purchase.

MORE CLASSIC CARLIN! 5
Watching these shows now after his untimely death, I appreciate them even more. Not only are they funny, they are completely engrossing as you watch a master at work! Although this is not a personal favorite, it's still a great set! Like a fine wine, George got better with age and there were better set to come. Well worth buying!

R.I.P. George
You will be missed.

Threw it out5
Had forgotten that he had to be so filthy to be funny. Threw it out!!
