Buyology: Truth and Lies About Why We BuyBuyology: Truth and Lies About Why We Buy by Martin Lindstrom
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $11.25
A promising premise but in the end lacked substance. Would have made a good article in HBR or similar. Basically fMRI studies on advertising and purchasing desire. An interesting field, but Paco Underhill's stories were more informative and better told. I am sure Lindstrom will write again, and his next effort will be a marked improvement!
Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes EverythingWikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything by Don Tapscott
Buy new: $18.45 / Used from: $3.09
This was on my shelf a while before I started reading it. I find Tapscott's writing style a bit turgid. Wikinomics was OK on that front, but the book's exuberance for all things Web 2.0 was like reading E-Business books 10 years ago. There is a lack of objectivity in their analysis, which is disappointing. This book could have been half as thick with the same message.
The Pig That Wants to Be Eaten: 100 Experiments for the Armchair PhilosopherThe Pig That Wants to Be Eaten: 100 Experiments for the Armchair Philosopher by Julian Baggini
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $2.49
How I discovered I am not much of an armchair philosopher! For lonely people and those with dull friends I think... Maybe I am just not smart enough!
Undercover PhilosopherUndercover Philosopher by Michael Philips
Buy new: $13.22 / Used from: $3.08
I knew this was an opportunistic knock off of 'The Undercover Economist' (or rather I assume it was around that way), so I was expecting something quite similar, but with from a philosopher's perspective. I was disappointed. Too narrow to be 'An Introduction to Philosophy' as well. An OK read in its own right, just the wrong title.
Gut Feelings: The Intelligence of the UnconsciousGut Feelings: The Intelligence of the Unconscious by Gerd Gigerenzer
Buy used from: $3.84
I enjoyed this little book, and do recommend it. Quite an easy read, although not as provocative to a layman like myself as it is billed.
Strategy and the Fat Smoker; Doing What's Obvious But Not EasyStrategy and the Fat Smoker; Doing What's Obvious But Not Easy by David H. Maister
Buy new: $19.79 / Used from: $14.06
I have always enjoyed Maister's books - in reality his collected articles - so took my time to seek this one out. It was self-published, which made finding it very hard. It was not carried in stock by Borders or B&N in the US when I tried to find it, but eventually make it to Kinokuniya in Singapore. A good read, on message, and well thought out.
The Art of Strategy: A Game Theorist's Guide to Success in Business and LifeThe Art of Strategy: A Game Theorist's Guide to Success in Business and Life by Avinash K. Dixit
Buy new: $18.45 / Used from: $13.38
A really great book, despite (a) its name, and (b) its size. The subtitle is far more accurate! And it is nowhere as imposing as its girth suggests! Game theory without the math!
The Milkshake Moment: Overcoming Stupid Systems, Pointless Policies and Muddled Management to Realize Real GrowthThe Milkshake Moment: Overcoming Stupid Systems, Pointless Policies and Muddled Management to Realize Real Growth by Steven S. Little
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $2.06
A whimsical book that is well suited to a short flight. I liked it. After the first couple of chapters, I thought the message was going to be 'Know Your Strengths, Play to Them' but it didn't quite get there - which even after reading the whole thing I think is still a hole in the argument made. Great metaphor, easily applied.
Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us)Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us) by Tom Vanderbilt
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $3.53
Well written and constructed, this is an interesting cross-disciplinary discussion on various aspects of driving and traffic. I know that sounds extremely dull... but it isn't!
Sway: The Irresistible Pull of Irrational BehaviorSway: The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior by Ori Brafman
Buy new: $14.93 / Used from: $7.24
Billed as a 'companion' to Gladwell's books, I liked this one immensely. A different wrting style, but well selected stories, well told. Very enjoyable.
Authenticity: What Consumers Really WantAuthenticity: What Consumers Really Want by II Pine
Buy new: $17.79 / Used from: $4.41
I generally consider the Harvard Business School Press brand to be a sign of a well-written and researched business book. Some recent books have been very disappointing, but this isn't one of them! A bit academic in its writing style, but good substance, on topic, with good ideas. Isn't that why we read books?
The Opposable Mind: How Successful Leaders Win Through Integrative ThinkingThe Opposable Mind: How Successful Leaders Win Through Integrative Thinking by Roger L. Martin
Buy new: $15.11 / Used from: $6.99
A good read, as I have come to expect from Harvard, but not as convincing as the author would like it to be. Many good ideas, but (like all books!) maintain a healthy level of skepticism. Perhaps it is too Fortune 500 US company centric...
The Myths of InnovationThe Myths of Innovation by Scott Berkun
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $6.13
Innovation is one of my pet areas (as students will attest to!) so I read quite a bit in this field. Berkun's book is a valuable contribution. Easily read, with a 'mythbusters' theme, it does retread some obvious areas but from a slightly different perspective.
The Mind of the Market: How Biology and Psychology Shape Our Economic LivesThe Mind of the Market: How Biology and Psychology Shape Our Economic Lives by Michael Shermer
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.12
The subtitle on my copy is 'Compassionate Apes, Competitive Humans, and other Tales from Evolutionary Economics.' I think my one is a better description of the book. Evolutionary economics is (I think) an interesting field, and this is a good starting point.
The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to GoogleThe Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google by Nicholas Carr
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $7.00
I used 'Does IT Matter?' as required reading in 2005. Its core message was bang on. The Big Switch is a great read, but lacks the controversy of his earlier work. I also found this book an odd mix of historical perspective (great for non-IT folk) and what's next (which is of value to IT more than non-IT), which I think will alienate many readers.
The NumeratiThe Numerati by Stephen Baker
Buy new: $17.16 / Used from: $2.65
A quant story by a non-quant. A worthwhile read, although I found the writing style a little too distracting - what his interviewees were eating and wearing during meetings, for example. Lacked depth and critique in places, but interesting selection of big-number-analysis cases.
The Cult of the Amateur: How blogs, MySpace, YouTube, and the rest of today's user-generated media are destroying our economy, our culture, and our valuesThe Cult of the Amateur: How blogs, MySpace, YouTube, and the rest of today's user-generated media are destroying our economy, our culture, and our values by Andrew Keen
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $2.50
Keen tries hard to make his case that Web2.0 is destroying our culture, but while his concerns have validity, his desire to control the web as the solution is short sighted and unworkable.
Pathfinders: A Global History of ExplorationPathfinders: A Global History of Exploration by Felipe Fernández-Armesto
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $7.39
A meaty tome, written in FFA's characteristic style (i.e., you'll need a dictionary). A fun romp through the history of western exploration (despite the title, not a lot of non-western commentary). Very readable.
The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our LivesThe Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives by Leonard Mlodinow
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $7.99
Well written for those who find maths a challenge, but otherwise a rehash of The Black Swan and Against the Gods.
Profit From the Core : Growth Strategy in an Era of TurbulenceProfit From the Core : Growth Strategy in an Era of Turbulence by Chris Zook
Buy new: $21.12 / Used from: $0.01
A solid book of ideas for business execs to test their business strategies for logic and consistency. I think most firms would fail when held up to the light of core business focus logic. Strongly recommended. Easy to read
