Spinoza: Complete WorksSpinoza: Complete Works by Benedictus de Spinoza
Buy new: $64.52 / Used from: $58.07
As of March 2008, the only one-volume English translation of the whole Spinoza corpus. Features the translations of Samuel Shirley. Curley is the better philosopher but Shirley is the better Latinist. A must for serious Spinoza students.
A Spinoza Reader: The Ethics and Other WorksA Spinoza Reader: The Ethics and Other Works by Benedictus de Spinoza
Buy new: $27.28 / Used from: $14.96
Contains a fine translation of the Ethics, plus important excerpts from other works and the letters. The translations are by Edwin Curley. Highly recommended.
Ethics (Oxford Philosophical Texts)Ethics (Oxford Philosophical Texts) by Spinoza
Buy new: $27.95 / Used from: $5.50
A translation of the Ethics by a noted Spinoza scholar. I prefer the translations of Curley and Shirley to this one. The book does contain excellent editorial material, including a long introduction, a fine summary of the Ethics, a useful bibliography, a very helpful glossary, and good indexes.
The Ethics: Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect : Selected LettersThe Ethics: Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect : Selected Letters by Benedictus de Spinoza
Buy new: $37.95 / Used from: $15.97
This is one of the best translations of the Ethics. Welcome additions in the volume include the Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect, an important early work, plus selected letters. The translator's preface (Samuel Shirley) is a fine discussion of important terms in Spinoza's philosophy.
The Essential Spinoza: Ethics And Related WritingsThe Essential Spinoza: Ethics And Related Writings by Benedictus de Spinoza

Contains the same Shirley translations as above, with the additions of the Short Treatise, First Part, and Principles of Cartesian Philosophy, Part I. There are 29 letters in this edition, and two helpful appendices: (l) A list of propositions from the Ethics, and (2) A list of citations in the proofs. Has a bibliography but no index.
Spinoza's Metaphysics: An Essay in InterpretationSpinoza's Metaphysics: An Essay in Interpretation by E.M. Curley
Buy used from: $35.00
This influential work on Spinoza is unfortunately out of print. I prefer Bennett's interpretation, but Curley's is more lucid, elegant, and much shorter. Highly recommended.
A Study of Spinoza's EthicsA Study of Spinoza's Ethics by Jonathan Francis Bennett
Buy new: $16.95 / Used from: $9.49
The best commentary on the Ethics. A detailed, highly critical (but sympathetic) analysis, this book is rigorous and demanding. Not for beginners, but a must for graduate students and other serious readers of Spinoza. Bennett is one of the most outstanding scholars of early modern philosophy. All of his works are highly recommended.
Benedict de Spinoza: An Introduction, Revised EditionBenedict de Spinoza: An Introduction, Revised Edition by Henry E. Allison
Buy used from: $35.49
This is a very good comprehensive introduction to the thought of Spinoza. The three middle chapters deal with the Ethics, and the last two cover political philosophy and philosophy of religion. This book is currently out of print. It would be great if Allison would produce a second revised edition, thus taking into account the last twenty years of Spinoza scholarship.
Behind the Geometrical MethodBehind the Geometrical Method by Edwin M. Curley
Buy new: $25.95 / Used from: $13.93
An introductory book by a top Spinoza scholar, in the notes it carries on a debate with other scholars (mainly Bennett). Curley's more demanding work, Spinoza's Metaphysics (1969) is out of print. Highly recommended, although I side with Bennett.
Routledge Philosophy GuideBook to Spinoza and The Ethics (Routledge Philosophy Guidebooks)Routledge Philosophy GuideBook to Spinoza and The Ethics (Routledge Philosophy Guidebooks) by Genevieve Lloyd
Buy new: $18.29 / Used from: $14.75
This is a very good introduction to Spinoza's Ethics, ideally suited for undergraduates and other beginners. Clear, concise, and informative, there is a lot of good stuff in this short book.
Spinoza's 'Ethics': An Introduction (Cambridge Introductions to Key Philosophical Texts)Spinoza's 'Ethics': An Introduction (Cambridge Introductions to Key Philosophical Texts) by Steven Nadler
Buy new: $78.69 / Used from: $46.98
This superb introduction to the Ethics is a welcome addition to Spinoza scholarship. Professor Nadler has the best discussion of Spinoza's atheism (so-called atheism?) that I have read. Advanced students will also profit from this lucid and insightful book. Highly recommended.
SPINOZA (Routledge Philosophers)SPINOZA (Routledge Philosophers) by Michael Della Rocca
Buy new: $23.89 / Used from: $21.25
This is a first-class, comprehensive account of Spinoza's philosophical thought. It is authoritative and philosophically sophisticated. The prose is clear and the information is presented in a cheerful, informal style. This book rivals Nadler's commentary on the Ethics as the introductory book of choice on Spinoza. Highly recommended.
Spinoza's Book of Life: Freedom and Redemption in the EthicsSpinoza's Book of Life: Freedom and Redemption in the Ethics by Steven B. Smith
Buy new: $40.00 / Used from: $17.95
A clear, concise introduction to the Ethics. The emphasis is on the moral rather than the metaphysical implications of the work. Good at relating Spinoza to other important philosophers.
Spinoza and SpinozismSpinoza and Spinozism by Stuart Hampshire
Buy new: $35.00 / Used from: $19.43
This is a revised edition of Hampshire's 1951 book Spinoza. Added are two essays, the influential "Spinoza and the Idea of Freedom" (1962), and "Spinoza and Spinozism" (2004). Recommended.
Spinoza's Theory of Knowledge.Spinoza's Theory of Knowledge. by G H R Parkinson

Originally published in 1880, this is the best of the older books on Spinoza. Contains much that is still valuable. Highly recommended.
SpinozaSpinoza by John Caird
Buy new: $23.99
Originally published in 1888, this idealist reading of Spinoza is colored by Hegelian sympathies. The author was a highly respected theologian and the principal of the University of Glasgow. His brother Edward was an Oxford philosopher noted for his books on Kant and Hegel. No index or bibliography.
A Study Of The Ethics Of Spinoza: Ethica Ordine Geometrico DemonstrataA Study Of The Ethics Of Spinoza: Ethica Ordine Geometrico Demonstrata by Harold H. Joachim
Buy new: $22.59 / Used from: $25.67
First published in 1901, this is one of the better older (before 1950) books on the Ethics. Worth taking a serious look at.
The Philosophy of SpinozaThe Philosophy of Spinoza by Richard McKeon
Buy new: $25.00 / Used from: $13.16
This 1928 book, a comprehensive overview, emphasizes the unity of Spinoza's thought. McKeon rightly stresses the importance of Spinoza's rationalism. This goes against some recent scholarship (e.g., Curley), and may explain the neglect of this book by the Spinoza community. A learned book that deserves more attention.
SpinozaSpinoza by Leon Roth
Buy new: $23.75 / Used from: $39.10
First published in 1929, this book is an overview of Spinoza's philosophy and accurately reflects the state of Spinoza scholarship in its day. Still useful for serious students of Spinoza.
The philosophy of Spinoza (Meridian giants)The philosophy of Spinoza (Meridian giants) by Harry Austryn Wolfson
Buy used from: $9.00
A magisterial, exhaustive (896 pp.) commentary on the Ethics. Published first in 1934 in two volumes, and in 1983 in one volume with original pagination. The analysis is dated, but the book remains valuable for its account of the major influences on Spinoza: Aristotle, Maimonides, and Descartes. Curley disputes the Aristotle part, and I concur.
Benedict de Spinoza;: The elements of his philosophyBenedict de Spinoza;: The elements of his philosophy by H. F Hallett
Buy used from: $12.42
A 1957 introduction to Spinoza by a noted Spinoza scholar. This short book emphasizes concepts and is rather dense for a book of its type.
The Radical SpinozaThe Radical Spinoza by Paul Wienpahl
Buy used from: $22.48
The author interprets Spinoza as some kind of Zen Buddhist! He states that Spinoza was no atheist and had no influence on subsequent philosophic thought. Wrong on both counts! This book is just plain weird. Not recommended.
Spinoza: Practical PhilosophySpinoza: Practical Philosophy by Gilles Deleuze
Buy new: $10.10 / Used from: $6.96
Originally published in French (1970), this short book is mainly composed of an analysis of Spinoza in dictionary form. Deleuze was a brilliant and provocative philosopher, and his Nietzschean interpretation of Spinoza is not for everyone. Highly recommended for "free spirits."
Savage Anamoly: The Power of Spinoza's Metaphysics and PoliticsSavage Anamoly: The Power of Spinoza's Metaphysics and Politics by Antonio Negri
Buy new: $20.08 / Used from: $15.95
First published in Italian (1981), this book was written in prison by a radical Marxist philosopher. For Negri Spinoza's concept of power is the key to understanding his metaphysics and political philosophy. A most interesting work!
Part of Nature: Self-Knowledge in Spinoza's EthicsPart of Nature: Self-Knowledge in Spinoza's Ethics by Genevieve Lloyd
Buy used from: $32.95
This 1994 book is a fine contribution to the scholarly literature. The emphasis is on the connections among Spinoza's metaphysics, ethics, and the notion of individuality. Especially good at showing how Spinoza confronted Descartes' problems and tried to overcome them.
Representation and the Mind-Body Problem in SpinozaRepresentation and the Mind-Body Problem in Spinoza by Michael Della Rocca
Buy new: $110.00 / Used from: $83.99
A careful, state of the art study of Spinoza's philosophy of mind. The results have important implications for Spinoza's metaphysics. Highly recommended.
The God of Spinoza: A Philosophical StudyThe God of Spinoza: A Philosophical Study by Richard Mason
Buy new: $36.99 / Used from: $27.99
Mason's analysis of the Theological-Political Treatise is very helpful, his views on the Ethics less so. Sides with Curley against Bennett. He and Curley claim that Spinoza was no rationalist. I strongly disagree.
Spinoza's Critique of ReligionSpinoza's Critique of Religion by Leo Strauss
Buy new: $23.08 / Used from: $29.30
Originally published in Germany in 1930, the English version arrived in 1965. The author was a gifted and controversial political philosopher at the University of Chicago. Strauss is highly critical of Spinoza and has little regard for the latter's rationalism and promotion of liberal democracy. Recommended only for aspiring Straussians who yearn to rule the world.
Meaning in Spinoza's MethodMeaning in Spinoza's Method by Aaron V. Garrett
Buy new: $53.00 / Used from: $58.55
A welcome contribution to Spinoza scholarship, this book attempts to understand the famously difficult methodology employed by Spinoza. Garrett is very good at describing the various influences on Spinoza (Maimonides, Gersonides, Descartes). His knowledge of the scholarly literature is impressive.
