![]() | Coming of Age in the Milky Way by Timothy Ferris
Buy new: $11.51 / Used from: $4.66 One of the most accessible histories of science, great biographical info on scientists mixed with science. He argues in a few places for an anti-hubris view of knowledge, criticizing Aristotle as a know-it-all and favoring quantum indeterminism. Though he fails to understand that free will is also undermined by indeterminism. I love the ending -- a Cosmic intelligence network -- very inventive!

![]() | Einstein's Cosmos: How Albert Einstein's Vision Transformed Our Understanding of Space and Time (Great Discoveries) by Michio Kaku
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $5.03 Kaku is another great populizer of physics. Einstein is still extremely fundamental to the 'study of the large'. You will see Kaku in many documentaries, Fox news sometimes, and on radio (he has a science radio show too).

![]() | QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter (Princeton Science Library) by Richard P. Feynman
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $11.02 And, of course, quantum theory is just as important. Feynman himself is highly influential. He has many books on Amazon for us to explore, including his book on "The Character of Physical Law" and his multi-volume lectures for students of physics.

Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $4.11 |
![]() | NOVA - Physics: The Elegant Universe and Beyond
Buy new: $37.49 / Used from: $25.33 Based on Brian Greene's book by the same name on his theory of everything, his string theory to unify gravity and quantum mechanics. Fantastic. I never fully understood the break down of Einstein's relativity at black holes before this. It comes with two Nova overviews of Einstein; I liked the 'Journey' one quite a lot but not so much the 'Big Idea' one devoted to e-mc^2.

![]() | The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality by Brian Greene
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $2.99 Brian Greene is the Great Explainer or Brain Buster! I had trouble with his relative motion examples, the whole frog Higgs field examples, and the 'seeing into our future at a distant perspective' examples...but he forces you to learn in a deep way even if you don't quite get his explanations! Also he is an Einsteinian or a Spinozian lover of super-symmetry.

![]() | The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory by Brian Greene
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $8.59 His first book, it goes into more detail on a number of issues. Michio Kaku is another popular science writer who has a couple books on similar topics.

![]() | The Illustrated A Brief History of Time / The Universe in a Nutshell - Two Books in One by Stephen Hawking
Buy used from: $4.54 Hawking is perhaps one of the most witty and subtle thinkers of popular science literature. After reading Brian Greene's careful step-by-step approach, I went back to Hawking's works and was a little shocked at how dense they are with imaginative ideas. No wonder Hawking's works are the second highest selling books in human history!

![]() | Visions: How Science Will Revolutionize the 21st Century by Michio Kaku
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $1.97 He defines science in an interesting way and provides a history of the three fields of science/technology he expects to advance the most in the future (Computers, the Biomolecular, and Quantum Mechanics); then he speculates about future advancements. Good history, excellent predictions both small and large. Goes along excellent with Hawking's "Universe in a Nutshell," esp. Ch. 6 on Star Trek.

![]() | Cosmos: Carl Sagan (7 DVD Set)
Buy new: $74.99 / Used from: $69.93 Cosmos is a must have classic. I love his discussions on the definition of life, his bike riding example of relativity, his evolution examples...well basically everything! Free on IMDB (http://amazon.imdb.com/title/tt0081846/).

![]() | The Universe: Collector's Edition Megaset
Buy new: $38.99 / Used from: $66.95 The History Channel's excellent ongoing series. I sometimes have difficulty following the thread of its dynamic narratives (you can't look away!), but it's packed full of ideas, with whole episodes devoted to a common theme, such as the Sun or a planet and so on.
