Customer Reviews
No more colorful maps at the back of the book...
I've used Lonely Planet city guides for all of my trips (Sydney, Hong Kong, Beijing, Budapest, London), and I've really become accustomed to using the maps at the back of the book. I bought this latest edition of the London city guide as a gift for my sister who will be visiting there soon. When I took a look through the book, I was so disappointed at how much the format has changed. I didn't even glance at the information, so that's not what my review is about. I am just unhappy at how the maps have changed so much, and if you are like me and have used lots of other Lonely Planet city guides, it feels much less user-friendly than previous editions.
A very useful guide, but could be better.
I have used Lonely Planet Guides for all of my trips. They are invaluable. This particular guide has a few failings. One is the map of the underground and bus routes is way too small--almost unreadable. Another is that there is very little information about certain sections of London. It concentrates on the tourist attractions and neglects the areas of London where it would be nice to know of a decent restaurant or 2. The information on how to use the underground is lacking in detail, particularly on what ticket to buy and how much they cost. It covers the main points but there is little detail. It should say that the big problem with riding the London buses is knowing where to get off, but does not. It is easy to get on a bus, but knowing which stop is yours is a real trick. It should also say that the bus schedule is somewhat unreliable especially at night. The bus we wanted to take to Victoria Station at 1:00 am did not stop for us because it had on it a passed out passenger that had to be hauled to the hospital. Drunks have priority.
Great!
Excellent guide that helped me through London. The walks listed were particularly helpful in enabling me to make the most of my stay. I'd recommend a combination of this and a pocket sized guide by Time Out.
