Customer Reviews

Beware -- the good reviews are for other software titles!1
I purchased Reader Rabbit Math ages 4-6 based on the excellent reviews listed here. The software was so awful that I had to come back to see why everyone thought it was so great. Then I noticed under each review "for an alternate product." Maybe other Reader Rabbit products are good but this one jumps from counting objects in Level One to adding three numbers on Level Two. I would think that it would make sense to stick to 2+2 before jumping to 2+3+4 which is what this program does. My five year old was immediately intimidated and confused by the software when she tried Level Two. Definitely not worth the money!

Needs Updating3
Having purchased the Reader Rabbit Learn To Read With Phonics, I wondered if there was a similar excellent product for early math learning. Unfortunately, Reader Rabbit Math, though it has some fun games, is a relic of an earlier era of educational software, and is difficult to install on a modern system, such as Windows XP. Reader Rabbit Math is an adaptation of an earlier game called Math Rabbit, and as a result, has some compatibility issues.

Both Reader Rabbit and Math Rabbit make an appearance in this title, as operators of two halves of a math carnival. Unlike the Learn To Read With Phonics series, there is no story arc for this math game, so it lacks the imaginative adventure that may help motivate some youngsters to keep going. This title is more like a conventional computer game, in which players play various math-based games to accumulate points. The two halves of the game are patched together somewhat awkwardly, and when a player chooses to play the Math Rabbit half, the screen area of the game actually shrinks by about 25%, perhaps reflecting older code that was written for display adapters with much lower resoltion than is available today. Also unlike Learn To Read With Phonics, the software makes players choose what level of difficulty they want to set for each of the games every time you play, rather than keeping track of a player's progress and adjusting the difficulty automatically, while keeping these configuration settings away from access by the youngsters.

When using the software with Windows XP, the program needs to run in Windows Compatibility mode.

Educational and fun!5
It's tough finding something for kids to play while not spending a fortune and wasting brain space on senseless games. The Reader Rabbit series are great because they offer great ways to learn while keeping things simple and fun in a cartoon-like format. The software is easy to install and I found that my six year old could easily navigate the program without getting stuck. She sat on it for hours!! I was surprised to see the fun she had with the program and look forward to purchasing further copies.
