For young children, moving to a new home presents a unique set of challenges. While older children grasp the concept of permanent change, preschoolers may not until they have been in their new surroundings for several days or weeks. They experience a move on a very sensory level, reacting to changes in sights, smells, sounds, and climate. And while they may not be leaving a school or friends, they are leaving a familiar community and routines that must be rebuilt in their new environment. "Big Ernie's New Home" gently affirms the normal sadness, anger, and anxiety that young children feel after a move. And as Big Ernie gradually discovers familiar comforts and exciting adventures in his new home, young readers may be encouraged to do the same in theirs. In an extensive Note to Parents, Dr. Jane Annunziata discusses the feelings that young children face when moving and offers a wealth of suggestions for smoothing their adjustment.

Customer Reviews
great for a troubling time
This book has a great story for a child living the adventure of a life move. The star character, a cat, is a wonderful associative character that is easy to tie into mentally for a young, innocent and mostly powerless child who happens to be living a similar, scary story. The only thing I would have changed (and I did when I read it to my son) was the link of something bad about to happen with going to the doctor. That is a whole other adventure.
It's about a CAT
This book is just okay - I bought it for my 2 year old before we moved and hadn't realized that the Ernie in this book is the cat, not the little boy. It's about the cat being upset by the change in routine/ scenery, rather than the little boy. I did not care for it too much.
A Classic in Every Sense
Teresa and Whitney Martin have given parents a book that is not only an artistic masterpiece, but a wonderful teaching tool. The writing is simple and direct, but has a subtely of humor and detail that makes the characters come alive and delivers a strong emotional impact.
As for the illustrations, I can't say enough about the vivid, painterly style, the exciting compositions, and the characters that jump off the page. This is illustration that melds painting and storytelling in a unique and classic way. No child, or parent, should miss it!!!
