Customer Reviews

Can only be installed on solid wood for stair-top use1
From researching online and reading reviews this gate sounded perfect.

However, when I opened the box and began reading the instructions, there was a warning: Do not install if you have one of these situations on either side of the staircase... sure enough we had two of the situations - metal railing on one side and a plaster wall with a wood baseboard on the other side.

Basically you can only use this if you have solid wood (or stud support at specific heights) on both sides of the stair. And there are no additional attachments that you can buy to work around it - I checked with the manufacturer.

It would have been helpful if this information had been included directly in the product info on the Amazon website.

Love that this gate is collapsible5
I have this gate at the top of two stairways, and I love it. It is collapsible, meaning the two panels slide against each other when it is open to make the gate narrower. (This is a feature I couldn't find in any other gate.) It makes it much easier to walk around it, or push it out of the way. We tried a different gate a first, but the wide swinging gate was such a nuisance. Other features I like about it: It is solid and strong, and it is unfinished wood so you can stain or paint it if you want. The latch is metal and solid, unlike some of the plastic flimsy ones we saw in stores. (The latch is a little difficult at first, but you quickly get used to it... and kids can't figure it out.) The hinge is simple and the gate can EASILY be temporarily removed when only adults are around - and then easily be put back onto the latch that is installed on the wall/railing. Gates in general are a hassle, but this one makes it as pain-free as possible.

Not the easiest to mount, but works great once installed4
This gate works great once installed. I like the wide range of gate widths without any extender pieces. There are a couple of things to watch out for during mounting though. The template they give you for the hinge side specifies a distance from the floor, but if you have moldings the flange on the latch side will determine how close to the floor it can go. The other thing that got me was the sag in the gate when extended. I'd recommend mounting the bottom bracket on both sides first, then see where the upper brackets want to go.
