Bock is especially strong on historical-grammatical matters, and somewhat sparse in addressing Luke as literature. Of course, this is the principal focus of Green’s commentary (see below) at the expense of historical background (i.e., the relationship between Luke and the synoptics).

A careful look at the argument of Acts; emphasizing God and his work. Luke sees the church as a realization of Jewish hope forced to become a separate entity. There is a focus on relevant Jewish and Greco-Roman background as well. Author Darrell L. Bock is the preeminent Lukan scholar along with I. Howard Marshall and an expert on the Historical Jesus (see The Missing Gospels).

D. A. Carson believes that Bovon is as deep exegetically and more seminal theologically than any other commentary on Luke (New Testament Commentary Survey, 5th ed. [Baker, 2001], 54). However, Bovon holds that Luke represents a specific form of the Pauline school in the third generation of churches, thus dating it rather late.
