![]() | Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible
Buy new: $47.25 / Used from: $43.23 Part I
The one volume commentary I turn to the most. Neither ultra liberal or ultra conservative while also striking a balance between quality scholarship yet readability. Also includes commentaries on the Apocrypha and I Enoch.
![]() | The Oxford Bible Commentary
Buy used from: $47.89 This also is a theologically moderate, one volume commentary of high caliber. A bit more technical than the Eerdmans Commentary, this will lend itself to intermediate students and above. (Covers the Apocryphal books too.) Another option at this level is the highly acclaimed New Jerome Biblical Commentary produced by top-level Catholic biblical scholars.
![]() | HarperCollins Bible Commentary - Revised Edition by James L. Mays
Buy new: $36.49 / Used from: $22.50 For the mainline Christian, at a less advanced level, this is an ideal choice. Some of the commentaries are mini classics, e.g. Paul Meyer's treatment of Romans. Also, includes commentaries on the Apocryphal books. For the evangelical, the "New Bible Commentary: 21st Century Edition" is of high quality.
![]() | The People's New Testament Commentary by M. eugene Boring
Buy new: $26.37 / Used from: $21.94 Part II
For a one volume NT commentary, this is an excellent choice. Informative and with a bit of liveliness to it, it also is highly readable for the general student, avoiding technical, academic discussion. It's moderation makes it suitable for both conservative and more mainline audiences. This is a work that wears its considerable scholarship very humbly.

![]() | An Introduction to the New Testament (Anchor Bible Reference Library) by Raymond E. Brown
Buy used from: $24.98 I suppose you could put this in the "classic" status of a highly regarded work by a top notch Catholic scholar (recently deceased). Brown is quite moderate and can be profitably used by students of any theological stripe though conservatives may demur at some of his methodologies.
![]() | Introducing the New Testament: Its Literature and Theology by Paul J. Achtemeier
Buy new: $26.40 / Used from: $16.00 The list of NT introductions is seemingly endless but this remains another quality option. Some find it uneven but I recommend having several NT Intros to use in conjunction with each other. Conservatives may opt for "An Introduction to the New Testament" by Carson and Moo or the more provocative "An Introduction to the New Testament: Contexts, Methods and Ministry Formation" by David DeSilva.
![]() | Engaging the New Testament by Russell Pregeant
Buy new: $27.72 / Used from: $9.95 I have to include this on my list of deserving NT introductions. |
![]() | Palestine in the Time of Jesus: Social Structures & Social Conflicts by K. C. Hanson
Buy used from: $5.99 A good introduction to a social-sciences approach to the Palestinian background in the time of Jesus. It's great to know biblical "manners and customs", like how a shepherd interacted with his flock but the deeper entry point of understanding a culture is through exploring the dimensions of it's socially constructed values and perceptions (e.g. honor/shame, dyadic personality, kinship etc.)
