![]() | I Often Dream of Trains by Robyn Hitchcock
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.39 Quirky British performer. Silly(in a good way)lyrics and song titles. Don't let any of that get in the way because he is also a terrific songwriter. I would guess his influences to be Syd Barett Pink Floyd, Dylan, The Byrds
![]() | Ken Burns JAZZ Collection: Billie Holiday by Billie Holiday
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $1.47 |
![]() | From the Original Master Tapes by Buddy Holly
Buy used from: $0.89 Although his recording career was incredibly short, Holly's status is definitely deserved. An incredible influence on so mnay artists there is no telling what he might have accomplished (22 when he died)
![]() | Warehouse: Songs and Stories by Hüsker Dü
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.96 Pop/Punk hybrid band and incredibly influential even if they never made it past cult status. Two gifted songwriters each with their own distinct voice. Often times you'll hear someone say "without the Pixies you wouldnt have_____" Well, without Husker Du you might not have had a Pixies.
![]() | Snap! by The Jam
Buy new: $45.99 / Used from: $17.93 1st generation Brit punk band who became super successful in Great Britain but never made it in the States. Didn't bother them one bit. Defiantly British to the core. Paul Weller loved American R&B and they could also be considered a mod band just about 12 years too late. Weller was just a babe when the band stated and would become a great songwriter
![]() | Laid by James
Buy new: $9.88 / Used from: $6.99 Loved by Morrissey if that means anything to you. James were a terrific little alternative pop band. They had much success back home and developed a loyal following in the States. Their albums can be erratic but when they are on.....Start with Laid
![]() | The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James by Elmore James
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $5.91 Chicago Blues. Very influential slide guitarist
![]() | The Best of Etta James by Etta James
Buy used from: $4.70 One of the great R&B, soul singers. I think she's still performing!!
![]() | Ritual de lo Habitual by Jane's Addiction
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.18 Very important band that (for better or worse) helped bring alternative music in to the mainstream. Very interesting hybrid of musical styles and Perry was a great frontman. Too bad they weren't around that long.
![]() | 24 Hour Revenge Therapy by Jawbreaker
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.24 West Coast punk/pop. Intelligent lyrics that aren't afraid to be "soft." In fact, I guess you could consider these guys an early "emo" band. Distinctive vocals by Schwarzenbach who apparently has smoked one too many cigarettes
![]() | Hollywood Town Hall by The Jayhawks
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $29.96 Hmmnn...alternative country rock. I don't know. This all gets confusing. Whatever the case these guys pretty much had it all. Great songwriting, beautiful harmonies and talented musicians. Unfortunately, when Olson left they lost something so try this or "Tommorrow The Green Grass."
![]() | Lonesome, On'ry and Mean by Waylon Jennings
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.61 Jennings is a great country music artist to convert those who say they hate country. This is outlaw country and the title of this album says it all. Although Jennings didn't write too many of his songs he was a great interpretor who did things his own way. Have a listen to this and some of his other 70's albums.
![]() | Billy Joel Greatest Hits: Vol. 1-2 (2CD) by Billy Joel
Buy new: $21.97 / Used from: $9.00 It's easy to pick on Joel. What's harder is to admit that he just has too many darn songs that you find yourself humming along to on the radio. Singer/songwriter
![]() | Elton John - Greatest Hits by Elton John
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $0.01 Another artist who is an easy target. Again too many good songs to ignore. Charismatic performer and pretty diverse musically if you really listen to his stuff.
![]() | This Perfect World by Freedy Johnston
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $0.38 Although it's been awhile since I've enjoyed a Johnston album, he had a great streak there in the 90's for me. Singer/songwriter
![]() | Greatest Hits by Journey
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $6.79 HAHAHA!. Lots of artists on this list (and take a look at the next one!) that I feel the need to justify. Hey, whatever you do, don't buy one of their albums. This is all you'll need...or want
![]() | The Best of KC & the Sunshine Band by KC & the Sunshine Band
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $4.18 Fun dance hits from the disco era
![]() | Killing Joke by Killing Joke
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $7.97 An extremely underrated band. Started out playing pounding droning dirges that just forced their way in to your head. Later on they became a bit more (dare I say) catchy and even danceable. Had to be a big influence on bands such as Ministry. They have had their up's and downs during their almost 30 years but their last two albums were pretty terrific.
![]() | King of the Blues Guitar by Albert King
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $5.00 Modern electric blues and another blues player that had a significant influence on rock guitar playing
![]() | Anthology by B.B. King
Buy used from: $7.44 The King of the Blues. "Nuff said
![]() | Aha Shake Heartbreak by Kings of Leon
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $5.00 Greasy southern rock
![]() | The Village Green Preservation Society by The Kinks
Buy new: $49.99 / Used from: $40.36 A band that doesn't really get it's just due in the States. Possibly because many of the Kinks best albums are very "English." I encourage everyone to look past "You Really Got Me" and "Lola" and check out their albums. This particular one would be a great place to start.
![]() | Alive! by Kiss
Buy new: $14.97 / Used from: $7.40 Probably their most popular album. Many of their songs do come across better live even if the rumors of massive overdubs on this "live" set are true. Although never a member of the Kiss army they do take me back to some good times
![]() | Retro by KMFDM
Buy used from: $2.10 German industrial band. Don't have a clue as to what their name stands for. Anyway, their albums area bit spotty so this comp may be the best place to start.
![]() | Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.99 |
![]() | Greatest Hits by Lenny Kravitz
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.73 Okay, you can't actually call Kravitz original but he doesn't get the credit he deserves for tackeling so many different styles of music. It's all been done before but he still (usually) brings something fresh to the mix.
![]() | Led Zeppelin IV (aka ZOSO) by Led Zeppelin
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.30 Awwww, c'mon I don't know of any white boy who didn't go through a Zeppelin stage. Awesome band.
![]() | Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon by John Lennon
Buy new: $12.97 / Used from: $4.98 Not much to be said. Of all the Beatles solo work his is the most interesting, albeit also frustrating.
![]() | Up the Bracket by The Libertines
Buy new: $30.98 Well, they didn't last too long, did they? Regardless, I couldn't resist hasving a listen to a Mick Jones produced album and I'm glad I did. Pretty great punk/garage type revival stuff.
![]() | The Georgia Peach by Little Richard
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.49 His claims to be the originator of rock & roll can be debated but he definitely is in the running. Love that howl.
![]() | Pride by Living Colour
Buy used from: $1.85 Important alternative metal band for reasons other then just the color of their skin
![]() | Forever Changes by Love
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.99 Yet another demented genius. Arthur Lee was the leader of this bada*s folk-rock psychedelic group. Produced 3 stunning albums and then Lee lost his way. R.I.P.
![]() | Basher: The Best of Nick Lowe by Nick Lowe
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.75 An artist I "discovered" later in life. Lowe was not a punk, however, much of his music was a back to basics style which certainly helped pave the way to punk. He also recorded such artists as the Damned.
![]() | Penthouse by Luna
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $4.17 Galaxie 500 might have been the more important band, but Wareham perfected things with his next band Luna. The melodies are more upfront and it's just got more energy. Luna produced some of my favorite albums of the 90's
![]() | Second Helping by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $3.49 THE definitive southern rock band. These boys were proud of their southern heritage but they WERE NOT (at least in the racist sense) rednecks. A fine mix of blues, rock and country these guys lived as hard as they played. Shouting out Freebird at a gig has become a tired joke that doesn't acknowledge that these guys were pretty darn great for the time they were together.
![]() | Bring It Down by Madder Rose
Buy used from: $2.96 Terribly overlooked indie band from the 90's. Sweet vocals and quality songwriting.
![]() | Holiday by Magnetic Fields
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $7.91 Another "band" (really just Stephin Merrit) that is kind of hard to classify. Indie electronic? I guess you could consider Magnetic Fields a pop Joy Division. Merrit's deep baritone might take some getting used to but his best work is definitely worth a listen
![]() | Bachelor No. 2 by Aimee Mann
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $1.99 Fantastic alternative pop and Mann is a great songwriter
![]() | Legend - The Best Of Bob Marley And The Wailers (New Packaging) by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $7.42 Yes he is indeed a legend of reggae and popular music in general. Marley has many spectacular albums but this is the best place to start. One listen and I guarantee that you'll be humming these tunes for days.
![]() | The Curse of the Mekons/F.U.N. '90 by The Mekons
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $13.20 You either "get" the Mekons...or you don't. They've been around for almost 30 years with different lineups and have produced several classic albums from styles ranging from rock & roll to alternative twisted country. Never the most technical of musicians their live shows are a drunken racous shambling blast
