Burning Brightly
A collection of unreleased bits and pieces may seem like it is going to be un-essential and possibly inferior to "proper" albums but this is a trully wonderful collection crammed full of surprizes, beauty and humour. There are gorgeous alternative stripped down session versions of Rock Bottom tracks including the sensual super-love track Sea Song, recent collaborations with old collaborator Hugh Hopper and LOTS of other goodies. It also features one of Wyatt's most daring recordings Little Child. This track is a reading of an old overtly sentimental Danny Kaye song, remembered from Wyatt's childhood. Wyatt performs the parts of father and child in character voices split with extreme stereo panning. Wyatt's sincerity stops the piece being just a funny curiosity OR too slushy to bare. Lttle Child is profoundly moving. For that unique track alone this is a MUST have but as I said before there is so much great stuff on this C.D.
great for those who already know him!
This is mostly a collection of demos and 'left overs' from the seventies, plus a couple of tracks with Hugh Hopper whos been a collaborator since the 60s. I would recommend that you start by listening to Rock Botton, Ruth is stranger, Shleep, Nothing can stop us or Donde estan to get the best of his solo work. But there are some incredible surprises in Solar Flares, like his take on the Monkees "I'm a beleiver" or the stripped down aproach of some of his classics. The notes (some penned down by Wyatt himself) are also very entertaining. Also, i think this is the first i have heard Wyatt play the cornet (sounds like trumpet) and he is very good at it!. Highly recommended to fans who already love his work.
Rock Bottom Robert@!
This release is a collector's release. Lots of home demo and Rock Bottom era songs masterfully put together by Cuniform AND Robert! And is is mostly just Robert with a multi-track recorder. Before buying, ask yourself how much you like Robert Wyatt? Do you want to know his musical genius, understand his personal drivers? The warmth and honesty of this release is well worth the price. If you are just getting exposed to Robert, pick up Rock Bottom, Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard, Mid Eighties, etc. for strictly avant gaurd entertainment. This CD will move you- once you understand his experience, his depth, his legacy. Priceless spin!
