A fine chapter by chapter Bible handbook for the non-scholar
Warren Wiersbe has an unusual ability to put things well for the non-scholar. Truth to be told those who preach and are theologically trained will find the contents helpful for ideas.

if you only had one book to help read the bible
I find "With the Word" to be a pleasant companion to daily bible readings. It has enough material to deepen your thinking, but it isn't a commentary.

An excellent Resource
This book is not a replacement for the Bible though it does look much thicker than most Bibles I've seen it won't feed you like the Word will.
This book does give you background information and insight into every chapter of the Bible. So if you're reading through the Bible in a year just as a resolution this is an excellent book to have. It will help you stay focused and you'll get more from the chapters as you read them than you would get if you just read them.
For me I use the handbook as a companion to my deviotional or just when I get a hankering to hop into the Word.
If the Bible scares you a bit because of it's age or whatever. This book will help you sort it out and make you feel as if someone who's been there is with you every step of the way.
