The Modern Middle East: A Political History since the First World WarThe Modern Middle East: A Political History since the First World War by Mehran Kamrava
Buy new: $16.81 / Used from: $11.25
Start Here. The "Modern Middle East" is a supremely written overview of middle eastern history since World War I. In this book, Kamrava fluidly lays down the not too distant history that has shaped the middle east into the fragmented, dis-unified region that it is today. From here the context for political dissent and terrorism is established for further study.
Through Our Enemies' Eyes: Osama bin Laden, Radical Islam, and the Future of America, Revised EditionThrough Our Enemies' Eyes: Osama bin Laden, Radical Islam, and the Future of America, Revised Edition by Michael Scheuer
Buy new: $7.88 / Used from: $4.70
A well informed writing on Osama Bin Laden's life, motivations, and war on the United States and those whom he perceives as a threat to Islam. I have to definitively say that this is the most important of all Scheuer's 3 books so far. It dispels the mythology around Bin Laden that is damaging to the internal US discourse. Should be read by everyone who engages in US foreign policy debate.
Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on TerrorImperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror by Michael Scheuer
Buy new: $7.88 / Used from: $4.78
A continuation of Through Our Enemy's Eyes, this time focusing more critically on US foreign policy and the dismal track record on countering Islamic terrorists. Scheuer dissects what the policies are and why they are failing. A very thought provoking read.

Huge in scope and highly informational. This book dives into the nitty gritty of the Afghan conflict and delivers a highly detailed, well researched account of the soviet and taliban experiences in Afghanistan. Also provides a firm picture of Pakistan's involvement.
Marching Toward Hell: America and Islam After IraqMarching Toward Hell: America and Islam After Iraq by Michael Scheuer
Buy new: $19.44 / Used from: $0.47
In case you haven't noticed, Michael Scheuer is one of my favorite authors on the topic. This volume is much more personal than the other two works. The points from Imperial Hubris are reinforced with new examples and creative delivery.

Saudi Arabia and the Politics of DissentSaudi Arabia and the Politics of Dissent by Mamoun Fandy

Definitely a more advanced writing. Requires some familiarity with Islam and modern middle eastern history. It is a wealth of writing on Islamic activists in Saudi Arabia. These are of speakers who have influenced islamic movements around the world. The author examines primary sources (tapes, manuscripts, sermons).
Unmasking Terror: A Global Review of Terrorist ActivitiesUnmasking Terror: A Global Review of Terrorist Activities

A highly informational volume on terrorism worldwide; so much so, that it is almost like reading a reference manual. Very valuable for honing in on certain topics. Contains analysis, statistics, and discussions by bona fide subject matter experts. (not the Fox News kind.)

Straight from the horse's mouth.
No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of IslamNo god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam by Reza Aslan
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $4.94
This is a very enjoyable read about the origin, history, and peoples of Islam. The history is presented in a very engaging, "as if you are were there" style that makes it downright fun to read. This book is a good departure point for those wishing to delve deeper into a specific piece of Islamic history.
