Product Description

“Two needles and one (or one more) skein of yarn—the possibilities never cease to amaze me,” writes Leigh Radford in the introduction to her new book. Radford’s fascination with the creative potential of these raw materials is evident throughout One More Skein, where she melds the alternative approach to knitting and felting she introduced in AlterKnits and AlterKnits Felt with the magic she worked with a single skein of yarn in the bestselling One Skein.

One More Skein features 30 diverse projects that can be completed with one or two average-sized skeins of yarn or multiple bits of leftover yarn. Projects include an earflap hat sized for the whole family; fingerless mitts; sweaters, britches, and capelets for baby; hemp jewelry embellished with jump ring “beads”; a felted, pleated sleeve to dress up a vase; and a multicolored blanket worked from assorted stash yarn. All of them are quick and relatively easy to make, without sacrificing beauty or ingenuity.

What to do With Single Skeins?5
Great little collection of one/two skein patterns (obviously depends on the yardage). Some patterns call for yarns that come in larger yardage skeins, though they are still techincally just one skein. Everyone needs at least one stash busting books in their knitting library - this is a great choice.

Leigh Radford's patterns are well written and carfully crafted. I did not seem to find any obvious errors, but if you do, the author (UPDATE: [...]) should have an errata page set up. Radford adds a few twists to common patterns to offer something just a little different. Most of the patterns are easy to adapt to various yarns. Nice for newbie-knitters. The patterns are fairly basic -- so not only are you using up loose skeins, these make great gifts. My favorite aspect is that you can buy on single skein of a luxurious/expensive yarn without the guilt and have a finished project. Beware that having too many one-skein books ends up in lots of similar/duplicate patterns.

Great one skein projects but too similar to the original "One Skein"3
I love the original "One Skein" and have knitted several projects from it (Single Cable Scarf, Spiral Bag). It's one of the first books I reach for when I need to put together a quick gift.

"One More Skein" also has many nice projects that require only one skein to knit; however, it's too similar to the original. In fact, a couple of the projects seem like they're just a rehash of projects from "One Skein."

So, if you've got the original "One Skein," this new book just doesn't offer enough new projects to make it worth your while.

Some cute patterns, some strange...4
I purchased this book for my mother-in-law who is a beginning knitter. It has appealing photography, and lots of simple patterns. Some are really cute (cute scarf and an adorable baby sweater), but some are ridiculous (I'm looking at you baby legwarmers and knitted necklace). She enjoyed it I think, and will enjoy it more when she has a grandchild so she can make use of the baby section, but I would never purchase it for myself. Too many books out there with a higher percentage of knittable patterns.
