Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
If rustic is your favored style for building your own home quickly and cheaply, read this. The kind of guidebook in which attention to detail and clarity of illustration are paramount, Williams' effort doesn't disappoint in those respects, and with chapters like "The Basics of Chain-sawing," "Squaring or Milling Logs," and "Sawing Framing Timbers," he doesn't fail to provide truly basic guidance to bottom-up construction, either. At the other--the finishing--end, Williams offers instruction in wiring, plumbing, cabinet installation, and even has a chapter on making doors that is separate from the one on hanging them. This is, however, not about assembling a prefab log home or even one made of materials from the local supply company. Both simple enough for the novice and comprehensive enough for those who already know the business end of an auger and where to stick it, it is for the serious do-it-yourselfer. And as an added attraction for librarians and biblioholics: a whole chapter on building bookcases. Mike Tribby

Customer Reviews

From the first log to the last4
This was a great book of one family's learning experience in log home building. Williams shows you how to build your own log home from his experiences for very little. It was great to know it can be done! I liked his floor plan and am using a similar plan for our home.

He explained everything in enough detail you would only really need this book to build the same home he built. All the way down to the kitchen cupboards.

For the inspiration.3
This book is good for the inspiration for anyone who want's to build a log home. It is lacking in photographs, no colour in the book. Before you start though, buy as many back issues of "Muir's Original Log Homes magazine" as you can afford, latest issues being the best. And there is a couple of good books on building with logs that you should buy. These will help you prevent some very costly mistakes.
