Julieta Venegas is the pop-goddess of Mexico. Thank you, Julieta for proving that intelligent pop music is possible in any language.

This and Axelle Red's "French Soul" are excellent introductions to the variety of la chanson nouvelle en France.

Ms. Croze's first, self-titled CD was an excellent introduction to this unique voice, and "Un bruit qui court" is even better and more varied. Her voice is reminiscent of some of the best Ethiopian female singers.

Kronos Quartet never bores or disappoints. "The Cusp of Magic" is one of their best CDs so far. For those who like a taste of Chinese music mixed with the genius of Terry Riley, this is for you. Wu Man, who plays pipa, adds much to the goings on here. Be sure to check out "Ghost Opera" (the next in this list) as well.

Oh boy! What a mix this is...Afro-Latin rhythms, jazz sensibilities, and the beautiful voice of Bobi Cespedes!

... and this one's even mellower. This must be one of the most interior CDs I've ever heard. When I first heard a track from "Being There," I had to stop what I was doing and really listen. This is very subtle listening--not background music.

Get this double-CD set if you like the Beatles. These may be the best interpretations of their music in many, many years.

One of my favorite bands, Buffalo Daughter put out some pretty interesting "experimental" rock CDs. This is my favorite for its variety of textures and adventure.

Last (and certainly not least), Barton Mclean's "Forgotten Shadows" is indescribable. The title of this CD probably describes the music best. He takes the listener through a dreamscape of shadowy memories and images that evoke both nostalgia and surprising discoveries.
