Product Description

Ideal for trapping rabbits, skunks, large squirrels, and similar-size nuisance animals. The Havahart two-door cage trap has been designed for the safety of animals. This humane trap, with its two spring loaded doors, has many features to allow safe, quick and easy catches. Constructed of sturdy wire mesh with steel reinforcements for long life, and galvanized for maximum resistance to rust and corrosion. Mesh openings are smaller than competing traps of comparable size to prevent escapes and stolen bait. Two spring loaded doors allow animals to enter from either direction. Sensitive trigger ensures quick, secure capture. Solid door and handle guard protect user during transportation, while smoothed internal edges protect and prevent injuries to animals. Made in the USA.

Good choice for squirrels4
I had a female squirrel chew through a gable vent and make a nest for herself (and babies) in our attic. This trap is a good choice for squirrels -- rat "snap" traps are too small. The model 1040 trap is a slightly better choice -- it has the same width and height, but is a little longer, making it less likely that the squirrel's "butt" will hold the door open.

Keep the instruction sheet packed with the trap. It describes how to adjust the sensitivity of the pan. Trip it a few times yourself to make sure you are fully familiar with it. If squirrels still manage to steal the bait, try smearing peanut butter on the underside of the pan -- it's harder for the squirrels to steal it that way.

Now, the part you DON'T want to know. You are not doing the squirrel any favors by relocating it. Many states (mine included) specifically ban relocating squirrels and other wild animals. At best you are giving your problem animal to some other homeowner. At worst, squirrels and other small mammals are territorial and will die if transported to unfamiliar territories where the current residents are unlikely to welcome them anyway. Also, all wild animals harbor diseases and parasites (fleas, ticks, bot flies, etc.) -- transport the animal and you spread local infections.

The animal really does have to be humanely destroyed.

Trap works great for catching rabbits.

First night we put it out, we caught a large rabbit. Second night we saw a small rabbit walk inside the trap, eat all the bait, and walk right out again!

Turns out that the trap was not sensitive enough to catch the smaller bunnies. But thanks to a review here, we found out that the trap's sensitivity is easily adjustable - the instructions are a bit opaque in this area. If you want to make the trap more sensitive to smaller animals, see the section of the instructions entitled "Correcting Over-Adjustment to the Trigger Rods". The steps are very easy & quick.

Would have given the trap 5 stars, but deducted 1 star for the poorly titled instructions. I don't design rabbit traps, what in the world is a trigger rod. "Correcting Over-Adjustment to the Trigger Rods" accurately describes WHAT you are doing, but a new inexperienced, maybe slightly dumb user like me with a problem to solve is looking for a section with a title that tells me that it contains the steps that will solve my problem.

Sorry for the rant.

After adjusting the trap, we caught the smaller bunny the next night. Highly recommend this trap.

Two rabbits caught in 5 days...5
and all my plants are recovering nicely! This trap works as advertised and is saving my sanity. I tried everything to stop the damage including "Deer Off" to no avail. Within 2 days, I had one of the rodents and 3 days later another. The damage to my plants has ceased. It is amazing how much damage one rabbit can inflict. I have since purchased the chipmunk trap to capture the rodents stealing the bait from my rabbit trap (I want to make sure that no other rabbits move in). I caught my first within a day of setting it up. The traps seem to be pricey but are well constucted and should last a lifetime. When I started to add up the amount of damage being done, they will easily pay for themselves! Just make sure that you take the little critters to a park far, far away.
