![]() | Creating a World Without Poverty: Social Business and the Future of Capitalism by Muhammad Yunus

![]() | The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time by Jeffrey Sachs
Buy new: $11.05 / Used from: $4.95 See my longer review. I agree with this author, who condemns the "economics" of the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization as both ignorant and destructive of developing countries.
![]() | Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich
Buy used from: $0.01 This book really got to me. When I realized that some people are so poor that their refrigerator is a plastic bag in the toilet water tank, I was shaken.
![]() | A Framework for Understanding Poverty by Ruby K. Payne

![]() | Pathologies of Power: Health, Human Rights, and the New War on the Poor (California Series in Public Anthropology, 4) by Paul Farmer
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $8.30 The title sums it up nicely. What the rich fail to understand--which the elite in NYC understood in the 1920's--is that poverty breeds infectuous disease, and as Larry Brilliant (Google.org) likes to point out, infectuous disease is indiscriminate--it has killed over twenty Popes, Presidents, Kings, Queens, and Prime Ministers.
![]() | The Working Poor: Invisible in America by David K. Shipler
Buy new: $10.76 / Used from: $2.14 This book grabbed me. See my longer review. The author is correct, is you are working you should not be poor, but the reality is that we are making less now in real dollars than we did in the early 1970's, CEOs are looting their own corportions while exporting jobs to child and sweatshop labor. My personal estimate is that the dollar is today (2007) worth half what it wwas in the late 1980's.
![]() | The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty Through Profits by C.K. Prahalad
Buy used from: $7.19 Utterly brilliant. He should get a Nobel prize. Top billion can afford disposable sub-zero refrigerators. Bottom four billion need a two-dollar ceramic refrigerator, two long-necked containers with an air gap between them, that when buried in the ground will keep meat fresh for five days.
![]() | Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life by Annette Lareau
Buy new: $14.22 / Used from: $7.66 There is PLENTY of money, it is just badly distributed and badly managed. Every child should be able to sleep in a clean place sheltered from the weather, not go to sleep hungry, and have clean water to drink. This is not rocket science, it is just evil tolerated by too many.

Buy used from: $16.37 I like this in part because I believe that no community should fail those who are willing to work but fall into poverty.
![]() | The Lords of Poverty: The Power, Prestige, and Corruption of the International Aid Business by Graham Hancock
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $5.29 I agree with this. See also William Shawcross, Deliver Us from Evil, on how our mis-directed "humanitarian" assistance creates black markets and prolongs civil conflicts.
![]() | Submerge: Living Deep in a Shallow World: Service, Justice and Contemplation Among the World's Poor by John B. Hayes
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $3.71 Worthy. I would like to restore universal service with one big difference: not only does every American serve after high school or after college if they sign a contract prior to entering college, but they can choose one of three paths: armed forces, peace corps, or homeland service teaching or helping the poor. Immigrants desiring citizenship must sserve two years to qualify.
