Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Two girls decide to be best friends; the art, said PW, "has verve and charm, capturing the slightly volatile chemistry between eager Emily and the more demanding Alice." Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 1-Emily and Alice meet when Alice moves in next door. They become friends, do things together, and have a fight and make up, all in three brief episodes. This unoriginal story is much improved by Stevenson's cheerful, scrawly, pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations depicting the pleasures and annoyances of friendship. The layout is bright and inviting, with lots of white space and big pictures. Not outstanding in any way, but a good addition to large picture book collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
The blossoming of a friendship, in three brief chapters to read aloud or alone. When Alice moves in next door, Emily invites her over for cookies--with some misgivings (``Maybe [she] doesn't want a friend with red ponytails and striped knee socks'') that are soon happily dispelled. On a sunny day, the two negotiate over playing in or out: Alice is caring for Baby Sam (a toy raccoon), who's ill; Emily declares herself a doctor and cures him, but they still have to sing him to sleep before Alice will go out. Later, they quarrel and make up. The dynamics are amusing and right on target; Stevenson's cheery illustrations of the smiling little girls, busily at play, are nicely accommodated on large, square pages. Appealingly upbeat. Great read-aloud story about friends4
This is one of a few select books that appealed to my 2 1/2 year old upon first reading. The illustrations are wonderful and the girls are so likeable. The book starts when Alice moves next door to Emily - Emily wants to meet her, but is nervous that Alice won't like her pigtails, striped socks, or peanut butter cookies. Fortunately, the somewhat more hip Alice (with her long hair and sandals) likes Emily right away and they decide to be best friends. It's a great book for kids who are ready to try longer books and want more of a story than some picture books offer. But it is LONG (three separate stories in chapter form), so this is better for kids who have a good attention span (or for parents who are good at summarizing the text while reading aloud!).
