Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-- A collection of fables, folk tales, and poems, as well as excerpts from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , Pinocchio , The Wind in the Willows , The Nutcracker , and Peter Pan . Paintings by 16 different artists accompany the selections. Much of the art is highly reminiscent of the romantic works of 19th-century illustrators; some paintings actually have the same palette, arrangement of figures, and characters found in earlier artistic interpretations of these stories. Unlike Edens's The Three Princesses (Bantam, 1991) and The Glorious Mother Goose (Atheneum, 1988), which include early illustrative renderings of these works, this book holds little historical interest. It seems to be designed for home collections rather than for libraries, which will have all of these selections in many other sources. --Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, Laramie

A Treasury of Children's Literature4
This book is great for kids of all ages, with short poems and stories as well as longer stories for older children. It encompases literature from several different cultures as well.

Not my choice for a young child2
This is a beautiful, but dark book. While the illustrations are lovely, many of them are very dark and somewhat scary. Not appropriate for a young child or bedtime reading. We bought this for my 3 year old who loves many of the stories in the book and she was frightened by so many of them that we stopped reading from it.

This book sets itself above the rest5
While there are hundreds of books that contain collections of classic fairytales, what set this book apart were the gorgeous illustrations. They were vibrant, alive and drew the young reader's imagination into the tale. My nearly 5 yr. old grandson spent hours just staring at the illustrations, noting the details that made the characters come alive to him. I'm sure this will be a favorite book for a long time to come.
