Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2?A delightful visual smorgasbord. Large full-color photographs, strikingly framed by white space, present a rainbow of multicultural faces and expressions. Not only are many races represented, but also the models range from infants to the elderly. The rhyming text marvels at how features as simple as "two eyes, a nose and a mouth" result in infinite variety. Smiling faces demonstrate the differences that exist in eyes, eyebrows, and noses. Intrater makes a wonderful graphic point of how dull a world of sameness would be with a double-page spread of over 100 identical smiles. The message that our differences make us special is carried over to the final page, where readers are invited to paste their own picture among even more unique and beautiful faces (a problem for libraries). Young people-watchers can spend hours gazing at these pictures without the usual pitfall of being told not to stare. Although the text definitely plays second fiddle to the photographs, it serves to guide viewers to the diversity in humans that many of us take for granted.?Lisa S. From Booklist
Ages 3-6. Using numerous color photographs portraying a variety of faces and facial features, Intrater discusses eyes, eyebrows, noses, mouths, and lips. The simple, rhyming text reassures young listeners that differences in appearance are both interesting and desirable. The illustrations portray a wide range of ethnic groups and ages, but the author makes no mention of eye color or teeth. Although somewhat limited in scope, this may be useful for preschool classes or for very young children just learning the names for body parts. Kay Weisman

The Beauty of the Human Race5
This is not a book about body parts. It is a book about the beauty of the human race. I looked up this book in order to recommend it to a friend who is searching for pre-school curriculum materials having to do with the Oneness of Humanity. My little daughter, from the age to two, loved this book. The large pictures of faces, of every race and color, are gentle and appealing. The text talks about what we have in common. Everyone has eyes, a nose and a mouth, but they can be so different and in such different combinations. But what if we all looked the same? One page shows multiple photos of the same face, how boring. How much more delightful that we have such different characteristics: bushy eyebrows, turned-up noses, thick and thin lips. I have used this book at several storytimes, preschool classes, and events where I need to engage the attention of the littlest ones. You will, too.

Great picture book5
This book is great with the pictures and use of color. It shows diversity in all its wonderful differences.

Makes Me Smile5
This is one of my all time favorite books. My son was born with a partial cleft lip and I looked everywhere for a book to explain to him how unique and special he was...this was it. Although it does not address cleft lips specifically, it is more generalized prose with beautiful pictures. I also love how there is a place on the last page to put your own child's picture. All three of my children (ages 2 to 7 yrs.) love to read this book. It is a treasure!
